MARTIN PROUT – A MAN OF MANY GOOD DEEDS
MARTIN PROUT – A MAN OF MANY GOOD DEEDS
The Village of Ringaskiddy and surrounding areas were trust into shock and deep sorrow when the news of Martin Prout’s untimely passing was announced. His loss is uncalculable.
A MAN OF MANY GOOD DEEDS
There was standing room only in the Church when Fr. Sean O’Sullivan presided at the Requiem Mass
for Martin. In his homily he alluded to the wonderful kindness and generosity that was the trade
mark of this decent Christian gentleman. So much of his life was in giving and doing good for others
with unfailing regularity. If you wanted help or something done, then Martin was the one to call. He
did not have the word “no” in his vocabulary. He treasured his family and grandchildren who all
relished their next visit to Grandad. He surely enriched the lives of so many people.
SHAMROCKS
Martin was a long serving active member of the Club where he held many posts. He made huge
contributions at under age level and was associated with many successful teams. He was for many
years Vice-Chairman of the Club and played a significant role when the Club celebrated its centenary
year in 1998. The workload was enormous but Martin was always equal to any challenge. He saw
his own sons Peter and Michael come through the ranks to play at all levels including Carrigdhoun
and Cork. His wonderful daughter Deirdre was a very keen camogie and Ladies Footballer. Martin
was always very proud of them. He got his reward in giving and always endeavouring to make
things better for someone else. As his remains were carried from the Church draped in the
Shamrock colours, a guard of honour draw from young and old members stood in silence and in grief
bidding their final farewell. He was surely journeying to join his late beloved Helen in a better place.
TRIBUTES
Countless tributes poured in from many quarters as so many people and organisations tendered
their sympathies in this time of great sorrow. Former work colleagues, The National Schools of
Monkstown and Shanbally, the Local Community, the GAA and the Parish Council along with so
many others were lamenting his great loss. We were all privileged to know and befriend this noble
and man of good deeds.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Peter, Deirdre, Michael, his Grandchildren, brothers, sisters
and many other relatives and friends. May his reward be great.
JAFL V Carrigaline – 11/2
Played under lights in Carrigaline in the opener to the season. Carrigaline, always with a strong pick early in the season, won well….
Lisa Cronin creates Shamrocks History
She has a background full of Gaelic riches and no doubt they will enable and motivate her in leading the Shamrock Under Age Club to a prosperous future.
JAFL V Ballinhassig – 19/2
Shamrocks first home game in the league on Sunday morning resulted in a morale boosting win for the home side. They should have won by more but like all Ballinhassig teams, the visitors never give up.
The first half was a low scoring physical affair with Shamrocks leading by 0-3 to 0-2 at HT having played against the breeze. They opened up a 5 point gap midway through the second half with some excellent scores from the forwards and looked set for the win. But Ballinhassig scored a goal from a penalty and tagged on a point to leave the minimum between the teams. Shamrocks added on 2 points in injury time to leave 3 points between the teams before Ballinhassig reduced the gap once again to a single pojnt. The referee blew up soon after and Shamrocks got the 2 league points on offer.
This was a very encouraging display with some rustiness interspersed with some lovely football at times with full by the players and management.
Team: J. Wilson, D. Barry, C. Kidney, J. Tuohy, J. Browne, S. Andrews, C. O’Grady, F. Herlihy, A. O’Grady, C. Hayes, S. Collins, R. Twomey, D. Howard, C. Caffrey, S. Downey, R. Meighan.
JAFL V Courcey Rovers – 26/2
The footballers made the long trip to Ballinspittle early on Sunday afternoon and a one point defeat was their lot for their efforts. Shamrocks played well with some good performances from Fionn Herlihy, Seán Andrews, Andrew O’Grady and Jason Browne. Shamrocks were ahead at halftime but the goal gave them momentum to get the win. The mentors were happy with the display and the committment so far has been good
DÓM U18 FL V Blarney – 26/2
Blarney 1-12, Diarmuid Ó Murchús 3-6
This was a good performance from the Ó Murchús lads on Sunday, in particular in the first half. They led at HT but Blarney came back to lead late on by a point; however the Ó Murchús lads got an equalising point to deservedly get the draw. There were 8 Shamrocks players involved namely Barry O’Mahony, Kieran Maye, Cathal O’Donovan, Josh Bartlett, Liam Dorney, Killian O’Connell, Rob Barrett and David Herlihy.
Recent Lotto Winners – 27/2
Our four recent big winners in our weekly lotto were presented with their cheques on Monday night February 27th in the Shamrock Bar, Shanbally. They are pictured below with members of our Lotto Committee
DOMs U18 HL V Passage – 4/3
Ó Murchús got their league off to a winning start in Passage on Saturday afternoon. They were the better team throughout but Passage made them work hard for the win. An early goal from Cian Lynch settled Ó Murchus and further points from Ruairc Sisk, Lynch, Sam Foy, Robert Barrett and Barry O’Mahony who had a fine game at centre back enabled DÓMs to lead at HT by 1-8 to 1-2.
Passage pushed hard in the second half and only for a fine save from David Herlihy late on they culd have been much closer. Further points from Lynch. Sisk, O’Mahony, Conor Mansfield, Senan Buckley and the winning score from Cathal O’Donovan enabled Ó Murchus to pick up the win.
Team: D. Herlihy, N. Kearney O’Sullivan, K. Maye, L. Dorney, B. O’Mahony, S. Buckley, R. Sisk, C. O’Donovan, R. Barrett, C. Mansfield, C. Lynch, S Foy. Subs: L. Jordan, J. Kearney O’Sullivan
JAHL V Ballygarvan – 5/3
Ballygarvan 4-14, Shamrocks 0-15
Lost of rustiness on display from Shamrocks in their first hurling match. They will only improve over the next few weeks as they get stuck into hurling training. B
Ballygarvan struck for 2 quick goals early in each half to open up the gap that Shamrocks could not eat into despite battling all the way to the end. A lack of goal scoring deprived them of being much closer. Ballygarvan looked like they had more done on the core skills. Plenty of time for Shamrocks to improve.
Team shown below
U14 FL V Na Piarsaigh – 12/3
Shamrocks first venture into Division 1 was a winning one on Sunday morning in Shanbally. This was a competitive game against a team who played Premier 2 last year and Shamrocks were deserving winners. They played with the wind in the first half and led 0-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes, then 0-5 to 01 before Na Piarsaigh strruck for a goal from a penalty to keep them within distance at HT, 1-7 to 1-2 for Shamrocks. Rylan Browne with the goal.
A big second half was needed and Shamrocks stepped up a gear working hard throughout the team. They kept Piarsaighs out for the first 15 minutes and then put the game to bed with further goals from Donal Herlihy from a penalty and was a constant threat for Shamrocks throughout and Seán Óg Ó Loinsigh. Piarsaighs finished with 3 points on the trot but Shamrocks were comfortable enough in the end
JAFL V Valley Rovers – 12/3
Valley Rovers beat Shamrocks by 7 points in the league on Sunday afternoon last in Shjanbally. And those 7 points were scored in the first 15 minutes of the game when they repeatedly broke through the Shamrocks defence to lead 0-7 to 0-0 at that point. However, Shamrocks slowly got into the game and Cannice Caffrey finished a lovely move to the net coming up to HT to leave the score at 0-9 to 1-2 at the break.
Shamrocks tried all they could in the second half and matched Valleys but couldnt score the much needed goals they desperately required. Valley Rovers ran out comfortable winners in the end.
Team: J. Wilson, S. Hurley, C. Kidney, D. Barry, M. Hitchmough, G. Ronayne, A. O’Grady, A. McCarthy, D. Scriven, D. O’Flaherty, C. Hayes, S. Collins, C. Caffrey, C. O’Flaherty.
DÓMs FL V Grenagh – 12/3
Played in wet Camden on Sunday afternoon and no report is available. Suffice to say Grenagh won well
DÓMs U18 HL V St Vincents – Lá le Pádraig
A battling display in very wet conditions in Knocknaheeny on Lá le Pádraig. Ó Murchus played well in the forst half but Vincents took over in the second.
Team: D. Herlihy, K. May, N. Kearney O’Sullivan, S. Glossop, B. O’Mahony, S. Murphy, A. Brady, J. Bartlett, R. Sisk, R. Barrett, F. Mansfield, C. Lynch, C. O’Donovan

U8 Monster H Blitz – 25/3
DÓMs U18 HL V Castlelyons – 29/3

Team: D. Herlihy, N. Kearney O’Sullivan, K. May, S. Murphy, B. O’Mahony, C. O’Donovan, J. Bartlett, S. Buckley, R. Sisk, R. Barrett, F. Mansfield, C. Lynch, L. Dorney. Subs used – E. O’Sullivan, J. Kearney O’Sullivan, R. Deane, S. Foy, S. Glossop

JAHL V Kinsale – 2/4
Kinsale 2-18, Shamrocks 1-18
No report available. Shamrocks played well in defeat
DOMs U18 FL V Ballygarvan – 5/4
A good win for the U18 footballers in Ballygarvan in the football league; they played some great football at times. Amongst the scorers were Cian Lynch and Aidan Brady, both with 1-3, Cathal O’Donovan 1-1, Josh Bartlett 0-4, Ryan Murphy and Luke Jordan both with a goal each. Others to feature for Ó Murchús were Senan Buckley, Killian O’Connell, Shay Murphy, Danny Rock, Sam Glossop, Kieran Maye, David Herlihy, Nigel and Jack OSullivan Kearney, Liam Dorney and Rob Barrett
Unfortunately, David Herlihy suffered a broken collerbone as a result of a fall during the match and we wish him a speedy recovery
JAFL V Ballymartle – 6/4
Ballymartle 2-13, Shamrocks 1-7
A match played in Riverstick on Holy Thursday evening. Comfortable win for Ballymartle, no further report or details
DÓMs U18 HL V Ballygarvan – 7/4
Another good result for the busy Diarmuid Ó Murchús u18s, making it a double over Ballygarvan in 3 days, this time in the hurling league winning on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-10. Cian Lynch top scored with 1-8, 1-3 of which came from play. Further scores came from Senan Buckley, Sam Foy, Barry O’Mahony and Robert Barrett.
The team are having a good season so far and they can only improve as they go along.
U21 B Football Cup – 10/4
Valley Rovers second team got the better of a combined Belgooly/Shamrocks u21 team in their opening game of the Football Cup. The seven Shamrocks players involved were Seán Andrews, Cian O’Flaherty, Fionn Herlihy, Josh Bartlett, Rob Barrett, Kieran Maye and Mark Sisk. John Herlihy helped out on the line.
U16 FL V Crosshaven – 12/4
Unfortunately, an understrength Shamrocks U16 team were well beaten by Crosshaven in Camden on Wednesday evening. They were well down at HT and Crosshaven had the game well wrapped up at that stage. Down a number of players coming into the game, they were dealt a further blow when Liam Dorney injured his shoulder and he is now out of the frame for the next while. The club wishes Liam a speedy recovery.
This group are extremely tight on numbers and with two of their main players out injured for at least a few weeks, things are going to be a struggle for them but they will battle on.
JAHL V Ballinhassig – 13/4
No report. Well beaten.
U8 Monster F Blitz – 15/4
U12 FL V Brian Dillons – 17/4
The Shamrocks lads were game all night against a physically bigger and stronger Dillons team in Shanball on Monday night. They never stood off them and played their best football in the first half at which stage Dillons led 1-5 to 0-6. In the second half, the physicality began to pay off around the middle for Dillons and they got a grip on proceedings there. The scores began to flow a bit and they raced away to win, despite a Daniel Collins goal for Shamrocks. The keeper and the backs in particular played tehir part in an enjoyable game.
This was Shamrocks first game of the season and they will improve for the experience
U16 HL V Grenagh – 17/4
This was never going to be an easy task away to a very good Grenagh team on Monday night. There were some great, at times tenacious Shamrocks performances, in particular from the defenders, while the forwards had their moments as well. Young Shane O’Flynn in goal had a fine hour. While the going is tough, they can be sure they will get great guidance from John Finbarr and Sammy on the sideline
DÓMs U18 FL V Passage – 19/4
Well beaten in Camden on Wednesday evening; the Shamrocks players involved on the evening were Kieran May, Sam Foy, Cian Lynch, Josh Bartlett, Luke Jordan, Nigel Kearney O’Sullivan, Cillian O’Connell, Robert Barrett and Barry O’Mahony. Crosshaven players involved were Senan Buckley, Danny Rock, Sam Glossop, Fionn Mansfield, Ryan Murphy and Shay Murphy.
U14 FL V Kinsale – 21/4
Only Shamrocks second game all season due to weather, pitches and sickness; they overcame the nearly 2 month lay off to claim the league points in Shanbally against a good Kinsale team who started brightly. They scored 4 goals in the first half but Shamrocks showed signs of things to come by registering some nice scores up the top goal. At HT Kinsale led 4-2 to 2-4.
Some strong words at HT definately did the trick as Shamrocks were completely transformed in the second half and drove on to victory. They pegged teh lead back to 1 point by the 14th minute but finished mush the stronger from there with some lovely scored from a variety of players. Very encouraging performance going forward.
Panel: J. Keane, M. Dorney, R. Doolan, B. Hanna, S. O’Flynn, S. O’Mahony, S. Óg Ó Loinsigh, R. Barrett, C. O’Neill, O. O’Brien, D. Herlihy, S. Jordan, E. Boland, D. Field, R. Browne, Dorney, E. Murphy, B. Fitzgerald
U8/U9 H Blitz V Tracton – 21/4
There really isnt anything like games at this level. If your looking for tactics – look elsewhere!!!
Our thanks to the players, to the great support from parents, siblings and grandparents on the bank and to the coaches for organising (and reffing!!)
U11 HL V Passage – 22/4
U16 FL V Sliabh Rua – 23/4
Despite the defeat, the 16s put up a great display on Sunday morning against a huge Sliabh Rua team. Already down 2 of their main players, Shamrocks fielded 10 U14s as number are so tight and things didnt go to plan after 10 minutes as Ryan Doolan had to leave the field to get his wrist checked after an accident.
Sliabh Rua were physically running through the Shamrocks players with their advantage but in fairness to Shamrocks, they never gave up. Sliabh Rua led 2-8 to 0-4 at halftime but a good start from Shamrocks to the second half, which yielded a lovely Cian Lynch point and a superb Calum O’Neill team goal they had the defecit back to 6 points. They battled hard but a third SR goal put the seal on the 2 points.
We have to give credit to the young Shamrocks players who were a credit to the jersey when faced with practically impossible odds and a physically massive team.
U12 HL V Ballygarvan – 24/4
Another close fought game went the way of the Shamrocks opponents on Monday evening in Shanbally. Ballygarvan came back in the second half after Shamrocks had led by 1-2 to 0-3 at HT, Harry O’Neill with the Shamrocks goal. They tried hard throughout and played some lovely hulrling but Ballygarvan just about had that little extra when it mattered.
Well done to the players, the great support the lads got from the sideline and the coaches Steve and Mark assisted by Darragh.
Panel on duty – A. Sisk, B. Fitzgerald, F. Behan, P. Keane, M O’Neill, D. O’Rahilly, A. Horgan., R. Livingstone, C. O’Toole, M. Laffin, H. O’Neill, A. Boland, S. Jordan, R. Collins, I. Fenny, S. Quinn.
DÓMs U18 HL V Brian Dillons – 26/4
Ó Murchús, resplendent in their new jerseys, got the better of Brian Dillons on Wednesday evening in Shanbally. They got on the scoreboard early with a goal from Ruairc Sisk (3-4 from play) and they built on that lead for the rest of the half and led 2-10 to 1-1 at HT.
They continued to pile on the scores in the second half and the result was never in doubt. They have now finished their scheduled league games, sit top of the table and must wait to see if they qualify for a semi or a final
John Herlihy did a fine job of refereeing the game after the appointed referee didnt attend.
Team (13 a side): Sam Foy, Kieran May, Sam Glossop, Mickey Gray, Barry O’Mahony, Cathal O’Donovan, Aiden Brady, Josh Bartlett, Shay Murphy, Robert Barrett, Fionn Mansfield, Cian Lynch, Ruairc Sisk, Senan Buckley
U14 HL V Nemo Rangers – 26/4
The U14 hurlers travelled to Trabeg on Wednesday evening to play their first hurling game of the season against a team who reached last years final. They came away with a win on a scoreline of Shamrocks 4-11, Nemo Rangers 2-6.
It was a powerful display of hurling against a skillful Nemo team. Leading 2-5 to 1-3 at halftime, Shamrocks drove on in the second half and ran out handy enough winners in the end,. Well done to all on a great performance.
U11 FL V Whitechurch – 28/4
Week beginning May 1st 2023
U12 FL V Fr O’Neills – 2/5
Shamrocks 2-5, Fr O’Neills 0-7
The 12s footballers made the long trip to Ladysbridge on Tuesday evening a winning one, beating the home side Fr O’Neills by 4 points in the league, no more than their efforts deserved. Well done to all for travelling.
U16 HL V Aghabullogue – 3/5
A mighty effort from the 16s once again on Wednesday evening, this time in the hurling league. The young team stood up and were counted against their older opponents and led on by the older brigade of Barry and Cian, they really gave it their all at home to Aghabullogue before losing out in the end by 3-16 to 0-4, a wonderful effort from one and all.
They played with the very strong wind in the first half which blew right up the field and were doing well until 10 minutes before HT when Aghabullogue struck 2-2 to suddenly lead by 2-6 to 0-66; however, they responded well with some lovely points from Cian Lynch from both play and frees, Luke Jordan and Seamus O’Mahony. HT Aghabullogue turned around to play with the strong breeze leading by 2-6 to 0-11.
Obviously, the going was tougher in the second half but the young team, minus 4 of their main players now, kept at Aghabullogue and pushed them all the way and made them fight hard for the win. While defeat was their lot, they came out of yet another game with huge credit. Well done to them and to their coaches for keeping things positive all through.
JAFL V Ballygarvan – 4/5
No real report or info, Shamrocks were level late on but conceded 2 soft goals to lose out after a good display
U11 John Kerins Football Qualifying – 6/5
Shamrocks played the hosts in the first game and after a tough 24 minutes of football (12 mins a side), they came out winners by 3-2 to 1-2 after leading by the same margin at HT. They dug in deep in the second to get themselves off to a good start.
They next played Crosshaven and this was a great game with Crosshaven just about holding on for the win, the final scoreline was Crosshaven 1-3, Shamrocks 0-5. Shamrocks just couldnt score the equalising point after Crosshaven scored that all important goal just after HT up the hill into the breeze.
Shamrocks entered the final game knowing they were in with a shout of qualifying if they beat Ballygarvan. They duly did so, winning comfortably on a scoreline of Shamrocks 5-9, Ballygarvan 1-1
As a result of all this drama, Crosshaven topped the group with 6 points with Shamrocks in second on 4. Both teams qualify for the finals proper in Páirc Ui Rinn on Saturday June 24th, a day to look forward to. Naturally afterwards, the players were delighted.
Well done to all the players, the parents, the big support and the 4 coaches Darragh, Derek, Hugh and Donal
U7 H Blitz – 6/5
U12 HL V Douglas 2 – 8/5
The U12s played every well and showed great character on Monday evening against Douglas 2 but eventually had to give way to a strong Douglas 2 team. They battled hard against older opponents but Douglas 2 were able to get the goals needed to win the game. Management were happy with the lads after the game
DÓMs U18 HL V Castlelyons – 12/5
The league final was played in Castlelyons on Friday evening and Castllyons just about held on for the win by 4 point. Ó Murchús had plenty chances to win the game but shot a lot of wides. Castlelyons led by 6 midway through the second half; Ó Murchús battled valiantly to bring it back to 3 points but the all important goal never materialised and Castlelyons closed it out.
Sam Foy in the Ó Murchús goal made some superb saves and interceptions to keep Ó Murchus in the game
U14 HL V Courcey Rovers – 12/5
A draw was probably a fair result of this one, played in Shanbally on Friday evening.
The first half was even all through with Shamrocks finding it hard to get going against a tough physical opponent.
The second half continued in that vein and with 15 to go, it was still up for grabs. Then Courcey Rovers looked to be headed for victory with 12 minutes to go with a close advantage in a low scoring game; however, Shamrocks once again worked themselves back into the game and went ahead with some great free taking from Calum O’Neill and a brilliant first time pull from Sam Jordan for a top corner of the net goal to put Shamrocks a goal ahead with 5 minutes to go.
Courcey Rovers didnt lie down as usual and through their own excellent free taker, he punished all Shamrocks mistakes and they moved ahead into injury time by one point.
They went looking for an insurance point and could even have had a goal but some great goalkeeping from Calum Fitzgerald out on his own 21 when he dispossessed the Courcey Rovers forward; the ball was fed to Seamus O’Mahony, it eventually found its way to Calum O’Neill way out the far wing on a loop and with plenty to do, he stroked over the equaliser off his weak side on the run for a truly wonderful score.
Draw game and such was the excitement, the referee had to call out the score for the players who had no idea who was winning ; they were so engrossed in the play. A brilliant ending.
U8 H Blitz – 13/5
They played 3 good games against Sarsfields, Aghabullogue and Passage and played some great hurling throghoit. Our thanks to everyone who went along in the beautiful sunshine and to the coaches Colin and Shane for organising.
U9 H Blitz – 13/5
U11 HL V Sliabh Rua – 13/5
U16 HL V Crosshaven – 14/5
Shamrocks travelled to Crosshaven onm Sunday morning. They actually played very well up until the last 15 minutes before Crosshaven put proper daylight between the teams with some late scores in a high scoring game of ball. Best for Shamrocks on the day were Calum Fitz in goals, Billy Hanna, Donal Herlihy and Cian Lynch.
Week beginning May 15th 2023
U12 FL V Cobh – 15/5
The U12s were beaten to Cobh in the football league in Shanbally on Monday evening.
Drawing at halftime Shamrocks 1-4, Cobh 2-1, Cobh turned it on in the second half and ran out winners by 3-5 to 2-4
JAHL V Carrigaline – 15/5
Shamrocks led early on but Carrigaline came back coming up to HT and led 0-11 to 0-9 at the break.
Carrigaline streteched their lead to 5 points early on in the second half but Shamrocks showed great fight and fought back to level with 1 minute to go in oprdinary time; however, Carrigaline scored the next 2 points which won them the game. Great effort from the lads.
U14 FL Final V Na Piarsaigh – 19/5
Shamrocks turned in their best display of the year so far and captured the D1 league on Friday evening in Shanbally. They had too much for Na Piarsaigh on the night with a relentless display of football, all the way from the goalkeeper right through the field and to the subs who played their part. Shamrocks attacked early and often and were totally in control at HT when they led by 4-5 to 0-1.
They continued their dominance in the second half and introduced all the subs so players got plenty of game time.
This win sets them up for further competitions later on in the year. For now, we salute the players, their supportive parents and their four coaches/mentors Andrew, Dools, Brendan and Jason.

Front, l to r : M. Bermingham, C. Fitzgerald, S. Jordan, R. Barrett, O. O’Brien, J. Keane, P. Keane, R. Browne, E. Murphy, M. Dorney, E. Boland
U16 FL V Tracton – 21/5
Another gallant defeat for our U16s who scored 15 times against Tracton but still ended up on the losing side after conceding 5 goals; they were obviously the difference here.
At halftime, the score was Shamrocks 0-9, Tracton 3-1 and Tracton just about held on in the second half, ably assisted by a soft penalty as well – the Shamrocks players once again played well in defeat and can be proud of their efforts.
Lotto Presentation to recent winner Nardy Andrews – 20/5

DÓMs U17 HL V Clonakilty – 24/5
A high scoring game in Clonakilty on Wednesday evening. Ó Murchús lead for the entire first half thanks to an early Conor Mansfield goal. ASt halftime it was 1-10 to 1-8.
Clonakilty scored a goal after 5 minutes of the second half to move ahead for the first time and it was a lead they never lost; they scored another goal to seal the win 2 minutes from time.
Once again Ó Murchus were guilty of multiple missed scoring chances which is costing them in games.
U14 HL V Kinsale – 24/5
Another draw for the under 14 hurlers on Wednesday evening at a sunsplashed Shanbally. This was a close affair all the way through. Shamrocks led by 0-9 to 1-4 at halftime and had their work cut out to get a result against a good Kinsale team.
Kinsale were the better team in the third quarter and scored goals to get themselves 2 points ahead and looked good. Then it was Shamrocks turn to respond and they chipped away at the points and led by 1-16 to 3-6 with less then 5 minutes to go. However, Kinsale dug deep themselves and scored an unanswered 1-1 to share the points which effectively knocks Shamrocks out of a possible crack at qualifying for the league final.
They play away to Donoughmore on Sunday
U17 FL V Aghada – 26/5
A very exciting game of football went the way of Ó Murchús and this was significiant that DÓMs came out on the right side of a close game after a few near misses in the last few weeks.
Aghada started better and with an early goal on the board, they led midway through the first half at one point they were by up to 8 points, 2-6 to 0-4. But a strong second quarter from Ó Murchús with seven points followed by a goal had them in front by a point at halftime, 1-11 to 2-7
Ó Murchús got a vital goal 4 minutes into the second half to extend their lead to 4 points and despite Aghada reducing it again to a point with 6 minutes left, Ó Murchús stretched out again with a few late scores for a good win.
Scorers: Shay Murphy 1-3, Seán Canty 0-6, Fionn Mansfield 1-1, Cathal O’Donovan 0-2, Josh Bartlett 0-2, Cian Lynch 0-2, Eoin O’Sullivan 0-1
U17 FL V Aghada May 27th
U7 Football Blitz – 27/5
U14 HL V Donoughmore – 28/5
Shamrocks completed their hurling league campaign with an 8 point defeat to Donoughmore in Donoughmore. This was a catch up game from way back in March. Shamrocks led by 6 points with 15 minutes left but Donoughmore finished much the stronger. The Shamrocks lads will have learned plenty in defeat.
Shamrocks have finished 4th in the league which is a good performance considering where this group were a year ago and they will now start to focus on both the U14 and U15 championships for the rest of the summer, championships that are being run on a round robin basis and will feature a match practically every Friday night.
DÓM U17 FL V St Michaels – 31/5
Yet another close run thing for the Ó Murchús u17s. And once again their shooting wasnt at the level of the opposition and cost them the game.
Ó Murchus led at HT by 1-9 to 1-4 and looked in control but the concession of 2 quick goals in the 15th and 17th minute of the second half turned the game completely on its head and Michaels drove on from there to win by 4 points in the end; Ó Murchús only registered 1 point in the second half
Scorers : Shay Murphy (0-4), Rory Deane (1-0), Cian Lynch (0-2), Sean Canty (0-1), Sam Glossop, Eoin O’Sullivan, Senan Buckley (all 0-1 each)
June 2023
U14 FC V Canovee – 2/6
U12 HL V Crosshaven – 5/6
Crosshaven proved too stong for a game Shamrocks team in Shanbally on Monday evening
DOMs U17 FL V Michelstown – 14/6
O Murchús gave as good as they got against a slick and fast moving Mitchelstown in Camden on Wednesday evening, a Mitchelstown team who are top of the table. Ó Murchus are proving very competitive in this competition but arent really getting the results – yet!
U16 HL V Ballygarvan – 18/6
Shamrocks 1-19, Ballygarvan 1-12
Excellent win for the U16s who are finally getting some players back from injury. Well done to all on a great performance and a well deserved win.
JAHL V Courcey Rovers – 21/6
No report available in a game played in Shanbally
DÓMs U17 HL V Ahane Gaels – 21/6

Top scorers were Cian Lynch with 1-3, Barry O’Mahony with 0-6, thhe 2 Buckleys witha combined 0-4, Cathal O’Donovan with 0-1, Josh Bartlett with 0-1, Sam Foy with 0-1. Good to see David Herlihy back playing as well.
Well done to all
U14 HC V Donoughmore – 23/6
This was the semi final of the championship and just like the week before, Donoughmore proved too strong for Shamrocks who despite putting up a spirited performance, couldnt claw back the defecit. This team has definetly made progress this year though with many fine hurlers on the team
Donoughmore are a fine side
Attention now turns to both the U15 championship round robin and the U14 Shield Final away to Courceys on July 7th
U8/U9 F Blitz – 29/6
July 2023
U11 HL – 1/7
The under 11 hurlers played on Saturday and played very well on a hot day against Sliabh Rua, this was an excellent game though from the Shamrocks lads and the coaches were very happy with the lads who played some great hurling throughout the match
U15 HC V Tracton – 3/7
Excelllent win for the young u15 team on Monday evening in Shanbally and a good start to their round robin campaign. All players played well on the night in what was a good team performance.
They next play Blarney away next Monday evening in the football. The championships will alternate between each code each week.

U12 HL V Carrigaline (B) – 3/7
Another hurling win on Monday evening, this time for the magnificent u12 hurlers who beat Carriagline 2 by 4-3 to 3-3, a fully deserved win for this excellent group of players who all played brilliant hurling on the night.
A great team performance from the team against the wind in the first half, the boys blocked, hooked and did all the dirty work. At HT, Shamrocks were behind by 2 points. They played excellent hurling in the second half to win by a goal. Well done to both teams on a great game and to the Shamrocks players, supporters, Steve Mark and Darragh who helped out on the line.

Club Chiaráin – Day 5
All good things must come to an end and there was an air of regret and satisfaction prevailing when the Ice Cream Van brought down the curtain on the 2023 Camp. Regret, because a most enjoyable and fulfilling week for all concerned was over.
Children and Parents alike were absorbed into the special atmosphere and excitement that takes place, with each passing hour offering something new and novel. Satisfaction because another year of Hurling and Football for 5 year olds to 13 year olds was so special, with friends and schoolmates enjoying new found out of doors freedom and the making of new friends too.
Lining up at the Ice Cream Van waiting to be served with a full blown 99 was as good as mounting the steps of the Hogan Stand for an All Ireland Medal.
The support from Parents was much appreciated by the Organising Committee, goodwill is a great phenomenon anywhere.
U14 D1 Shield Final V Courcey Rovers – 7/7
Shamrocks played with a strong wind in the first half and settled well but scores were still hard to come by. Courceys were hard in their tackling but Shamrocks battled away and picked of some scores. The most important being a goal just on the stroke of half time giving them a 3-9 to 1-3 advantage.
Shamrocks were really up against it in the second half but each and every one of the lads gave there all and held out for a 1 goal difference at the end. That’s the final game for this special bunch of players who last year completed a Mid Cork Div 2 League hurling and football double.
This year the aim was to be competitive in Div 1 and again they finish the season with a trophy in both codes, Mid Cork Div 1 football league winners and Div 1 hurling championship shield winners.
U15 FC V Blarney – 10/7
Shamrocks under 15s were beaten by a good Blarney team in tough conditions in the FC round robin game in Blarney on Monday evening. This was a good hard game of football that will stand to the Shamrocks lads against a team who were older than them. Shamrocks took the wrong options at times and overplayed the ball at times as well. However, the coahes are determined to work through these teething problems which are normal for teams at this age.
Shamrocks have plenty more games to play in this round robin, the next FC game is at home to Sliabh Rua in 2 weeks time.
DÓMs U17 HL V Kilbrittain – 12/7
Good win for Diarmuid Ó Murchús U17 hurlers verses Kilbrittain in Shanbally on Wednesday evening.
The second half was a different affair with DÓMs playing into the dressing room ends. A burst of scoring from the 13th minute of the second half to the end enabled Ó Murchús to push on and win out by an impressive 4-15 to 1-12 in the end.
Ó Murchús have now qualified for the (West) final against Clonakilty which will be played soon, date and venue to follow
Scoreres for Ó Murchús: Ruairc Sisk 4-5 (4-2 from play, an exhibition from Ruairc), Cian Lynch 0-3, Josh Bartlett 0-3 from centre forward, Oisín Buckley 0-2, Fionn Mansfield 0-1, Joey Middleton 0-1.
U15 HC V Crosshaven – 19/7
1-8 to 0-1 in the final 11 minutes pushed Shamrocks onto victory over Crosshaven. It was the perfect response to an equalising goal Crosshaven had scored just before this to level things up for the first time; Shamrocks had led all through the game but looked in danger of losing after the goal went in. However, the finishing 11 minutes plus injury time could not have gone better for Shamrocks as straight after the goal, Donal Herlihy split the posts on the run and this was followed by two great Calum O’Neill points from play to stretch the lead back out to 3 points again.
Then Liam Dorney started to get into the game and his shot from the 21 found the back of the Crosshaven net soon after and that was the insurance they needed to finish with a flurry of scores which to be fair, was harsh on Crosshaven who had played some great hurling up to that point and contributed to a great game of hurling.
Shamrocks had more possession in the first half and led 1-7 to 1-3 with Calum in particular on song from frees in particular. It was a low scoring affair up until the second half when both teams got goals early on. Danny Field for Shamrocks started to influence things as well and he scored 2 goals in the second half along with some nice scores from Luke Jordan and Seamus O’Mahony who got a belt across the shin and had to be helped off the field mid way through the second half. It looked serious but he after sitting it out for 5 minutes he returned to the action – you cant keep this man down.
Overall a good team performance from all.

Shamrock Senior Hurlers win Co League Title and Beamish Shield 100 years ago
SHAMROCK SENIOR HURLERS WIN THE LEAGUE TITLE AND BEAMISH SHIELD IN 1923
Recently the final of the Cork Senior Hurling League took place in Pairc Ui Rinn between Blackrock and Sarsfields from Glanmire. Sars took the title in style for 2023 with the late Teddy McCarthy’s nephew, Donncadha minding goal. 100 years ago Cloughduv and Shamrocks crossed camáns in Turner’s Cross Pitch to vie for the title and the Beamish Shield plus a cheque for £15.
Senior Hurling 1923.
There were 14 Teams in the Senior ranks in 1923. Shamrocks had been promoted having won the Intermediate championship in 1915. They competed in the Senior Final of 1916 against Midleton
and lost by one point. They were up among the best in those days with a team of skilled and very committed players. In 1922 three Shamrock players played on the Cork Senior Team, Jim Russell
and the Kelleher brothers Frank and Dan. The team were affectionately known as “The Sporting Shamrocks”.
League final at Turner’s Cross Pitch
The Turner’s Cross pitch, now the Soccer Grounds, had been secured by The Redmonds Club and a lot of renovations and improvements were carried out beforeit was officially opened on July 29 th 1923. Redmonds were one of the leading Senior Clubs in those days. A tournament was organised by the Club to raise funds to cover the costs. A very valuable
Silver Cup, The Morsecock Cup, was presented by the Palmer family of Ringaskiddy for the Tournament. Palmers, were located on Palmers Island, now the Ferry Terminal and Deep Water
Jetty. They had wide interests in all aspects of shipping and were agents for The White Star Liners.
The cup got its name from one of their popular Boats, The Morsecock. The cup was of sterling silver and made by Wm. Egans of Patrick Street well known Jewellers and Silver Smiths. The
Shamrock team and supporters travelled by train from Raffeen to the City. The League final was played on September 16th with Cloughduv from mid Cork providing the opposition. The game was
very keenly contested with both defences keeping tight reins on the forwards. Shamrocks scored first with a great goal from Ned Frizelle. It was level at half-time but another goal from Frizelle in the second half put the team on the road to victory. The final score was 2-2 to 1-1. Shamrocks had a worthy Captain in Mick Kenny who accepted the Beamish Shield on behalf of the team. This large Shield made from Irish Oak was decorated with sterling silver. It was presented to The Cork County Board some years earlier by a member of The Beamish family, the well known Brewers, for Senior Hurling League Competitions. A bonus for the winning team was a cheque for £15.
Homecoming
The team and supporters travelled home to Raffeen Station by train and a large excited crowd awaited them to welcome their heroes on their historic victory, a first
Senior Title for the Club. The local Fife and Drum band ( National Foresters) were lined up to lead the victory parade. The Sister of the Captain, Julia Kenny, took the
shield and held it high and led the parade via Shanbally and onto Ringaskiddy. Every house along the way was empty with their occupants on the roadside to greet
and congratulate the victors. The parade went right through Ringaskiddy village passing Palmer’s Island on the left, The day was won and the spoils were theirs.
The victorious and historic team was: Mick Kenny (Captain), Dan Kelleher, Frank Kelleher, Leo Brady, Ned Frizelle, Johnny Tobin, Mickie Cotter, Joe Meighan, Bernie O’Flynn N.T., Frank Johnson, Jim Hayes, Dan Cusack, Jim Dyer, Tom Moore and Georgie Andrews.
Frank Kelleher won an All Ireland Senior Hurling medal with Cork in 1919 when the County wore the red jersey for the first time. Mickie Cotter played at full back on the Cork Senior Hurling Team that played against Tipperary in Michilin in Belgium in 1914 in the European Pan Celtic Festival. Leo Brady went on to win an All Ireland Junior Hurling medal with Cork in 1925. Dan Kelleher and Frank Kelleher won Munster Senior Hurling Medals with Cork in 1922. Ned Frizelle won a Munster Junior Hurling medal with Cork in 1916. Bernie O’Flynn also went on to play with Cork and became Principal of Shanbally N.S. Team Captain Mick Kenny and Dan Cusack immigrated to America and continued playing hurling in New York.
The team received a beautiful set of hall marked silver medals with gold centres depicting a round tower and greyhound. Many of the players wives and mothers wore the medals as brooches later.

Bingo Night Fundraiser – 21/7
Thanks to all who participated, who bought raffle tickets for the draw, to all who organised the event behind the scenes, to Sarah and her staff of the FBI and to anyone who organised spot prizes. There are too many local sponsors to go through but we thank them for their generosity.
U15 FC V Sliabh Rua – 24/7
Shamrocks led 3-6 to 2-5 at HT with goals from Calum O’Neill, Luke Jordan & Ollie O’Brien who played very well on the wing. Donal Herlihy was also on the scoresheet from play before he had to go off injured just before HT.
DÓMs U17 FC V Ballinora – 26/7
A blistering start From Ballinora to this FC Round Robin game enabled them to control the game and ultimately take the 2 points on offer for this first round game.
Goals in the 2nd, 9th, 10th and 13th minute effectively put the game to bed early on – after 15 minutes Ballinora led by 4-3 to 1-0. Ó Murchús settled down a bit after this and at HT Ballinora led 4-4 to 1-3
Again, the second half saw Ballinora in control and they ran out comfortable winners in the end, 6-8 to 1-7.

U15 HC V Passage – 31/7
The u15 hurlers were well beaten by Passage on Monday evening in round 3 of the championship.
While Shamrocks were down a few due to hols & injuries (14 players), they were up against a very slick and skilfull Passage team who had some excellent sticksmen in their ranks, in particular in the forward division and they scored from all angles and distances. They scored early and often. Shamrocks battled hard against the strong breeze and in the first half but were well behind at HT, Passage 2-12 to 1-4 ahead and it could easily have been more. Seamus O’Mahony came up the field for the Shamrocks goal from play with Calum O’Neill and Luke Jordan with the points.
Unfortunately, the Shamrocks forwards struggled to make any headway whatsoever against the Passage backs and the game petered out i the second half.
Shamrocks still have 2 more group games to play and are well in with a shout still of qualifying for a semi or a final.
The team are pictured below before the game

DÓM U17 HC V Kinsale – 2/8
A one point win for Ó Murchús in Shanbally in what can only be described as an extraordinary game of hurling. Both teams had big leads at different stages yet it came down to one solitary point out of 57 in the end.
After Kinsale opened the scoring with a quick point, Ó Murchús raced into a 0-10 to 0-1 lead after 13 minutes but Kinsale began to find their feet, took over and clawed the score back to 0-12 to 1-8 at halftime, Ó Murchús ahead.
The second half saw the exact flipside of that.
After Ó Murchús opened the scoring with a quick point, Kinsale raced into a 3-15 to 0-14 lead after 13 minutes of the second half and looked all over the victors. However, Ó Muchús began to find their feet just like Kinsale did in the first, they took took over and finished like a train, with a remarkable tally of 4-5 in the final quarter to win by that solitary score.
A magnificent comeback, well done to the players and management. They have 4 more games to come in this round robin; this was a good start.
Scores – Ruairc Sisk 3-8, Cian Lynch 0-4, Shay Murphy 1-1, Josh Bartlett 0-2, Sam Foy 0-1, Barry O’Mahony 0-1, Senan Buckley 0-1
U8/U9 F Blitz V Sliabh Rua – 4/8
Well done to the under 8s and under 9s who played Sliabh Rua in football blitz style games on Friday evening in Shanbally. As usual, these games featured everything with plenty of thrills and spills.
