On Sunday 9th September 1973, 50 years ago, Shamrocks won the u21 A Hurling Championship in Carrigdhoun. We got a great thrill beating our neighbours and great rivals, Carrigaline, in the Final in Minane Bridge. The game was played before a huge crowd, as it also preceded the S. E. hurling final between Ballinhassig and Ballymartle. Our game was refereed by Donal Coleman of Ballinhassig. Alas, Shamrocks have never won this competition since. It was a close and exciting game with Shamrocks finishing strongly with 2 or 3 minutes to go.
Final score: Shamrocks 4-12 Carrigaline 2-11
It was also a great year for Hurling in the Club as our u18(Minor) team also won the A Championship, beating Valley Rovers in the Final in July. In fact, 8 of that Minor team started in the u21 Final, with many of the other lads lining out as subs.
We invited all the lads from both the u21 and Minor Panels to meet first up at Shamrocks Pitch at 4pm, for a photo shoot around the Monument to the late great Ted Hanley RIP. (and a quick game of Backs and Forwards…..only joking!). We then moved down to the Shamrock Bar, where Peter Kingston provided us with refreshments. Thanks for that Peter and best of luck with the Shamrock Bar
