Shamrocks 6-9, Castlelyons 2-0
Shamrocks came into this game this morning without having played football in some time. We were on red alert as our opponents were the only team to defeat us during the regular season.
We knew that a good start was hugely important as it would settle us down. In fairness, we started like a train and had a decent lead until conceding 2 goals before half-time. We spurned a number of good opportunities during the first half but took heart from the fact that we were winning our battles all over the field. We took the opportunity at half time to refocus the lads and to let them know how well they were playing. We also let them know that with a little bit of composure, we would pile on the scores.
The second half started well for us and thanks to a number of soft goals, we pulled away from our opponents. To be fair to Castlelyons, they kept going and fought to the very end. They must be sick to death of us at this stage following our hurling victory against them last Friday week! We had fine performances all over the field; notably from a number of our younger players.
We have now qualified for the final of this competition; dates, venue etc to follow. Our aim at the start of the year was to try and get to the finals of both hurling and football competitions. Now that we have achieved this, we need a huge effort from everybody – not just the players – to try and win them. We had our biggest audience of the season today and it was great that the lads gave them a performance – thank you to all!
Our regular goal keeper, Josh Bartlett suffered a nasty leg injury during the week and we wish him a speedy recovery.
