This very talented group of lads played their finals of the U10 football leagues in a rain soaked Mayfield on Saturday. We were pitted against the much fancied Fermoy team in the semi final with the winners playing either Crosshaven or the host club Mayfield in the final. We were soon under the cosh as the much physically stronger and older Fermoy team carved us open time and time again in the first 10 mins. The difference in size and age was all too visible from the start. None the less our lads accounted well for themselves and never gave up the challenge. We were well beaten at the final whistle.
It was Mayfield who were our opponents in the 3rd and 4th place play off. Again both teams found it difficult to adjust to the elements. Mayfield started the more brightly and were leading at the half time whistle by five points. We regrouped and asked the lads to finish their football season on a high and they responded in fine style. We dominated possession in the second half and ran out winners on a score line of 3-06 to 2-04. Overall the football season was a great success. The players, teachers and parents deserve all the credit for preparing these lads for hopefully greater things to come. A special word of thanks to Shane O Donovan who managed this team and was present every weekend with them for both the hurling and the football.
