Tracton 3-7, Shamrocks 1-6
Shamrocks and Tracton played out a great game in tough conditions in Camden on Tuesday night before Tracton deservedly took the championship honours for the West B2 region. They were the better team and found scores that bit easier to come by while Shamrocks at the other end only scored one point from play in the whole game and relied on Harry Andrews for all their scores bar one. However, Shamrocks never gave up throughout and with one or two breaks in front of goal, especially in the first half, could have been much closer.
In the first half, Shamrocks played with the aid of the breeze and after 20 minutes, it was scoreless. This suited Tracton as Shamrocks really needed a lead. The first score arrived soon after and the teams were level at 0-1 to 0-1 in a real battle. It was in the 5 minutes before halftime that Tracton scored 1-3 without reply and this was the margin that they maintained until the end – Shamrocks just couldn’t bridge the gap despite plenty of first half possession and domination of the play.
Again, the second half was tight and Shamrocks began to eat into the 6 point lead, through Andrews frees. The margin was down to 3 points with 10 minutes left and they sensed at least the opportunity to equalise. However, a defensive mix up scuppered their chance and the ball ended up in the Shamrocks net and that really was it. Tracton and Shamrocks both added a goal towards the end before the trophy was presented to the winning team by the Secretary of the West Board Eddie Moloney.
Despite the defeat, it was great to see all the players in the FBI afterwards enjoying a well earned refreshment and finger food. Our thanks to the club and to Sarah of the FBI for organising that at such short notice. Also thanks to the parents and big support we had at the game.
