Shamrocks Under 10 hurlers made the long journey north to Mitchelstown to play the under 10’s of Ballygiblin GAA in the latest round of the under 10 hurling league on Saturday 9th of September.
There was a fine breeze off the Galtee mountains when our lads took to the field in a corner of Cork where the neighbouring counties of Limerick and Tipperary are only a puck of a ball away. We started well and were on top for most of the first half, good interplay and strong possession resulted in some well taken scores from the inside forwards. We were deservedly ahead at half time and some of the younger players had a particularly strong performance.
We knew to expect a revival from the home team in the second half, especially with the assistance of the wind that had picked up since the teams broke for half time. The home team did come out stronger in the second half and chipped away at our lead with some good scores and a number of frees. We were still ahead coming into the closing stages of the match but two quick goals from the hosts put them ahead and left us with too much to do. In hindsight it was probably a game we should have won based on our performance in the match as a whole, but credit to the hosts for their fightback in the second half and their deserved victory. We’ll learn from this game and be stronger for it.
Thank you to the under 10’s who were in attendance on the day. You have been brilliant all year and have turned out in great numbers for every game. Thanks also to the parents who made the long journey with the lads, we always appreciate your effort to get them to every game regardless of where it’s played.
