Shamrocks V Passage
First match back following the summer break saw us head to Passage on Saturday the 19th of August to play a football fixture. Following our good run of form in the early part of the season we wanted to continue where we left off before the break. Earlier in the summer we achieved some good results and most importantly we did it by playing some very good football.
Saturdays game didn’t disappoint and the two teams served up a cracking match that was very competitive right to the end. The Shamrock’s boys started the stronger with Cian Lynch, David Herlihy and Shane O’Mahony winning good ball in midfield and feeding the forwards with some accurate deliveries. Before long Calum Gregson had a couple of well taken goals in the back of the net and Passage were rattled. Harry O’Leary, Jay Taggart and Jason O’Driscoll fought for every ball that came to them and the pressure was on the home team. When they did manage to break out our defensive line made up of Euan Clarke, Calum O’Neill, Liam Walsh and Shane O’Flynn kept the scores to a minimum. Donal Herlihy playing in goal was very solid.
The Shamrock’s led at half time and we knew to expect a resurgence from the home team in the second half. It did come and Passage got some scores on the board early to lift their confidence. Our young backs competed strongly and our keeper pulled off some outstanding saves. You could see that the home team were getting fired up and the home support were beginning to get excited. But when it mattered Shamrock’s would win the ball, carry it down the field and our forwards would bury it in the Passage net. That was the difference on the day,our ability to move the ball into a scoring position and take our scores when we needed to.
By the time the final whistle went neither of the two young teams on the field were sure who had come out on top, as they were so engrossed in the action. They crowded around the referee seeking confirmation of the result.News that Shamrock’s had come out on top was greeted with a huge roar from the players in green.
This was a real team effort from our boys and every one of them played their part. The amount of games they are getting at this age bracket is improving them all hugely. Consider the fact that a good number of this team will still be under 10 again next year and the future looks bright for the Shamrock’s club.
