Shamrocks 3-3, Tracton 0-5
Our first hurling league game of the season saw Shamrocks overcome a stiff challenge from the lads from Minane Bridge. We travelled with big numbers – 21 players togged out.
Thankfully, the weather improved at throw-in time but a strong wind favoured the home side in the first half.
We were slow to settle and were 2 points down mid way through the half. We had the majority of the possession but found it tough to breakdown the opposition.
We struck 1-1 before half-time to give us a 2 point lead to take into the second half.
Again we started the second half well but couldn’t put up the scores. Gradually, Tracton got back into the game and with less than 10 minutes to go, we were only 1 point in front.
Our lack of hurling training was coming against us at this stage but we showed great resolve and stuck with it. We got two lucky breaks towards the end which resulted in 2 goals and we were comfortable at the end.
This was a good, hard game – a number of our lads picked up minor injuries – and this will stand to us going forward. We were able to introduce a number of our younger players and the game-time will be of great benefit to them. We were rusty and have a lot to work on.
There are a good number of hurling games in this grade and I have no doubt that we will improve greatly as the season moves on.
A big support came out again tonight – thank you one and all. Our next game is a Hurling League game v Aghabullogue next Saturday 08/04 at 2.00pm – texts will follow shortly.
