University College Cork bestowed Alumni Awards recently on some of its distinguished past pupils.
Included in this year’s list was Dr. Richard Palmer late of ‘Inver’, Ringaskiddy and an esteemed Vice President of our Club since 1998. Richard graduated from UCC with a BSc in 1959 and followed up with an MSc in 1961. He was honoured for his outstanding work over the years in the field of Research.
Richard was born in Ringaskiddy and a member of the Palmer family of Palmer’s Island. He played hurling and football with the Club and was a member of the Minor Football team of 1953 that contested the South-East Final. The other members of that team were Ned Flynn, Donal McDonnell, Sean Jordan, Jim Turner, Ray Sisk, Dof Flynn, Paddy O’Driscoll, Jerh. Coveney, Donal Livesey, Charlie Harte, Jackie O’Driscoll, Billy O’Rourke, Joe O’Driscoll, Danno Pierce, Terry Frizelle and Joe O’Flynn. He was also part of the 1959 Junior Hurling Team that won the South-East Final.
