Kildorrery 5-14, Shamrocks 2-8
The curtain came down on the 2016 playing season with defeat for the minors to Kildorrery in the league final in Mayfield on Sunday last. Shamrocks can have few complaints on this one as Kildorrery were clearly the better team and had a very good forward line who caused problems all match through for the Shamrocks backs. Every time they attacked they threatened a goal and they wrapped up this game inside the first 15 minutes when they scored 4 goals to leave them ahead by 4-2 to 0-3. Shamrocks were battling hard but were reliant on Andrew O’Grady mainly from frees. Mark Hitchmough and David Andrews also got on the scorsheet for Shamrocks who trailed at HT by 4-5 to 0-6.
Shamrocks needed a fast start to the second half; however it was Kildorrery who scored 3 points on the trot assisted by the breeze now. Their number 15 was unstoppable and he accounted for most of their scores – Shamrocks couldnt get a handle on him at all. Matthew Fleming scored Shamrocks opening point of the second half and Andrew O’Grady scored goals from a penalty and a 21 yard free to put some respectability on the scoreboard. Meanwhile at the other end Kildorrery were keeping their scoring rate upand ran out comfortable winners.
Thanks to all the team and management for a great year and best of luck to the players moving on to adult hurling (and football) in the club.
