MHL Final V St Vincents – 29/10

Shamrocks 0-19, St Vincents 2-11

Inside a short few weeks, the Shamrocks Minor team has won two League finals, football versus Tracton and hurling versus St. Vincents. Both games had a lot in common, the opponents were very formidable sides and it required huge commitment and leadership to reach the winners podium. These Shamrocks youngsters have what it takes and at Ballincollig’s magnificent playing pitch the city and South-East teams served up a late Autumn classic.

The opening twenty minutes was rather pedestrian and both sides showed signs of having not played hurling for several weeks. However, as each minute passed the tempo rose and at the break the teams were level Shamrocks 0-8 to St. Vincents 1-5.

The second half saw the intensity grow by the minute and scores were exchanged regularly. Shamrocks were three points in front and looking good when St. Vincents rattled in a great goal to make it all square. Then each side exchanged points to let it level 2-10 to 0-16 after sixty minutes. The Referee called for five minutes of added time. This put both sides to the acid test.

The city lads drew first blood with a well taken point but in return the O’Grady led team countered with three magnificent points and bag another great hurling title. The game was won and the faithful Shamrock following were in wild celebrations. Their lads had not let them down and gave them a great start to the October weekend.
Congratulations to all our brave and valiant Minor Players, their Coach and Mentors too, you have done our Club some service.
