Shamrocks 1-10, Kinsale 1-7
On a wet and soggy evening in Kinsale, after the fog had cleared and the referee had blown his full time whistle, it emerged that Shamrocks had won this league game by 3 points. They also captured the Jack Barrett Cup which is played for every year between these two clubs.
Shamrocks were full value for this win and actually should have won by more; however, they couldnt convert they’re possession into more scores,. Kinsale just wouldnt go away and stuck to their task gamely to leave the result in doubt until the end.
Shamrocks started brighter in the lashing rain and some nice points from Andrew O’Grady, Brian Sweeney and Alan McCarthy had them leading by 0-4 to 0-1 after 15 minutes. They were playing the better hurling and might have had a few goals as well but the shots were saved by the Kinsale keeper. Kinsale finished the stronger and at HT, the score was 6 points apiece.
Again, Shamrocks took over and went into a 1-8 to 0-6 lead midway through the second half after Brian Sweeney set up Darragh O’Sullivan who scooped the ball home on the run. Shamrocks were in total command here but they couldnt finish off Kinsale who got a goal late on to bring it back to a 2 point game, 1-8 to 1-6. However, despite a late Kinsale point, Shamrocks got 2 vital points themselves, both superb scores from play from Andrew O’Grady and Cathal Kidney
Training continues next week for the championship on the weekend of August 5th.
