JAHC V Kinsale – 17/6

Kinsale 2-8, Shamrocks 0-13

A most disappointing evening for the junior hurlers in the first round of the championship as they suffered a one point defeat to Kinsale. Shamrocks will spend a long time wondering how in the world they lost this game.

Kinsale played with the wind in the first half and went into a 0-2 to 0-0 lead early on before Shamrocks went 0-3 to 0-2 ahead. The teams were pretty much even in that half and Shamrocks were playing well. At HT, the teams went in level at 0-6 to 0-6 apiece.

Kinsale scored an early point in the second half to go 0-7 to 0-6 ahead but then Shamrocks took over for the next 20 minutes. Andrew O’Grady was on form from frees and Shamrocks moved into a winning position with 15 left on a scorelone of 0-10 to 0-8 and were on top all over the field. Then the game changed on a long high ball into the Shamrocks square which may have come off a Shamrocks stick and trickled over the line. Kinsale ahead 1-8 to 0-10. Frees for Shamrocks then started to go wide and a few goal chances were missed. O’Grady and Fergus O’Neill put Shamrocks ahead again 0-12 to 1-8 but then goal number 2 – a long high ball in as an attempted point went all the way to the Shamrocks net.

Incredibly, Shamrocks were behind and Kinsale’s tails were up and with 5 minutes to go, this game was only going to have one winner no matter what Shamrocks tried. The lads are going to have to dissect this one and pick themselves up for whatever back door game is next. With a few players to come back onto the panel, they can certainly do that as they have the ability.
