Laochra Óg 5-11, Shamrocks 6-7
Our first U16 hurling league game was played in Shanbally and resulted in a 1 point defeat to Laochra Óg team. Both teams found the heavy ground conditions tough going.
Laochra scored some early scores but the excellent combination of Cillian Hayes and Seán Andrews kept us within touching distance as the half time whistle approached. Daniel O’ Mahony was put on a man marking job on their excellent full forward and coped very well throughout. A great goal scored by Seán Browne had only 4 points in it at half time. Shane Downey in the half forward line was causing their defense all sorts of problems. He scored an excellent goal and this was followed by another from Luke O Driscoll.
Both teams were tiring in the heavy pitch as full time was approaching. Sam Geary scored two late goals to leave just a point between the sides in injury time. Alas we couldn’t find the equaliser. Still in all it was a great team performance and everyone can feel proud of themselves.
