MCFL V St Vincents – 6/3

Shamrocks 5-15, St Vincents 2-2

The minor footballers got off to a winning start against St Vincents second team in Shanbally on Sunday afternoon. The conditions were poor for both teams but the players on duty give it their best shot and there was no doubting Shamrocks victory in the end.

Shamrocks (wearing their changed strip of green, white and black to avoid a colour clash with our visitors) were slow enough to settle but a couple of goals midway through the first half settled them down and enabled them to dictate matters from then on. Playing up against the hill, Shamrocks controlled possession and it was obvious that it was only a matter of time until St Vincents caved in, despite their brave efforts. Shamrocks led 2-5 to 1-0 at halftime.

St Vincents mounted a mini revival of sorts just after halftime with a quickfire 1-1 but Shamrocks reasserted; they finished much the stronger and tagged on 2-6 in the last 15 minutes without reply to stamp their authority on things. There was a nice spread of scorers throughout the team. Overall, a workman like display, job done, with plenty more in the tank for sure. Players used: C. Corkery, J. Lynam, D. Barry, J. O’Keeffe, C. Scriven, D. O’Mahony, M. Hitchmough, D. Andrews, A. O’Grady, S. Flavin, K. Murphy, C. Hayes, C. Murphy.
