Charlie Maye RIP

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Charlie Maye having been elected a Vice-President of our Club in 2003. This much respected and popular gentleman has had very close links with our Club since he became a playing member away back in 1963.

He married Dina Sisk a member of a renowned Shamrock family. Dina’s father was the late Paddy Sisk a G.A.A. legend in his own time. In 1963 Charlie was a member of the Shamrock Junior Hurling team that defeated Ballinhassig in the South-East Final. His father in law, Paddy Sisk recalled in his memoirs that this final was a very special one for him personally. He had three sons on the team, Raymond, Ronnie and Noel, along with sons in law Charlie Maye and Paddy Drievers.
Charlie loved hurling and football and didn’t miss many games. He was an avid follower too of the Carrigdhoun Senior teams. His pleasing and cordial personality endeared him to many people.

Charlie was always in the locality and whether you were in Shanbally or on the Raffeen Road, there was a good chance you would get a greeting or salute from him.
A regular attender a the 10am Mass in Shanbally each Sunday morning, he would make the journey on foot. He always took up the collection on his side of the Church.
Surely a fine decent man in his own community seeking to do what was best for us all.

We will all miss you Charlie. May you rest in heavenly peace.
