Shamrocks 6-10, Clondrohid 6-6
Shamrocks entertained Clondrohid in Shanbally on Friday evening in the first round of the Football championship. Both theses teams remained unbeaten and were top of their respective leagues going into this fixture. This was the first championship game for many of these lads, it had all the ingredients for a cracker and it certainly lived up to its expectations.
Shamrocks lost the toss and played down the hill in the first half so to take advantage they felt they needed to clock up a big score. An early goal a point from wing back Sean Browne was the perfect start and the lads scored further goals from Dylan O Flaherty, Sean Andrews and Sam Geary. Clondrohid scored a few themselves and were well in the game at half time, the score reading Shamrocks 4-6 Clondrohid 3-3.
Strong words of encouragement were spoken at half time and the lads responded immediately with a cracker of a goal from Dylan O’Flaherty, however this was cancelled out immediately with a goal at the other end. At this stage Clondrohid were on top and had a few more points on the board before disaster struck. The referee showed a red card to a Shamrocks player for an apparent stamp on a player. He was the only one in the ground who saw this incident. The player himself was distraught as he didn’t know why he was sent off.
Shamrocks were down a man with fifteen to play and looked to be in trouble. Clondrohid were then awarded a penalty and scored and were now only a goal behind. Shamrocks rallied and a goal from Billy Hughes lifted the lads – a few vital saves from Cian O’Flaherty denied Clondrohid and Shamrocks got over the line. The final score read Shamrocks 6-10 Clondrohid 6-6.
