Ballinora 7-10, Shamrocks 3-5
Ballinora proved too strong for Shamrocks u14’s in the championship first round in Ballinora on Thursday evening. They were older, stronger, bigger, faster and had too many good hurlers for a Shamrocks team that battled right to the end in difficult circumstances.
The game was lost in the first 10 minutes as Shamrocks found themselves 4-4 to 0-1 down. Ballinora were scoring at will and the Shamrocks selectors Pa Andrews and Aidan O’Leary were busy men on the line making multiple switches to try and stem the tide. The changes worked alright and Shamrocks gradually got into the game whcih was played in a great spirit between 2 committed teams. Shamrocks went in at the halftime whistle losing by 4-6 to 1-5 after points from Seán Andrews, Cillian Hayes, Shane Downey and Daniel O’Mahony.
Whatever chance Shamrocks had of getting back into the game evaporated straight after the break when their lively corner forward, who was too fast and clever for our lads, banged in two quick goals. Shamrocks battled away and Cillian Hayes and Seán Andrews scored goals but it was nowhere near enough.
The championship season is over but the mentors are determined to continue with the hurling training, which will take place next Tuesday and Thursday at 11am for the U14’s and the U12’s. The 14’s have a league game on August 14th at home to Castlelyons.
