JAFC Semi Final Replay V Ballygarvan – 6/8

Ballygarvan 3-9, Shamrocks 0-7

Shamrocks adult playing season is now at an end after this 11 point defeat in the Football Championship replay on Wednesday night in Minane Bridge.

Shamrocks went with the same line up from the drawn game and played with the wind advantage and hill in the first half. Ballygarvan certainly had their homework done on Shamrocks from the first game and tweaked a few things and managed to get in the Shamrocks players faces from an early stage. It threw the Shamrocks players and Ballygarvan did what they did on Saturday night in the drawn game – they punished some sloppy Shamrocks play early doors. The Shamrocks full back line were in all sorts of trouble and Ballygarvan nailed 2 goals inside the first 15 minutes and were unlucky with another 2 as well. It was looking like a mountain to climb from this point; Shamrocks had plenty of possession but kicked a lot of wides. The one time they opened up the Ballygarvan defence, Darragh O’Sullivan blasted his point blank shot straight at the Ballygarvan keeper from 5 yards out. In the lead up to half time and Shamrocks 7 points down, this was a key moment. The half time score was 2-5 to 0-4 in favour of Ballygarvan.

Shamrocks tired manfully after the break and owned the ball for the first 15 minutes but just could not get that all important goal. For all the Shamrocks possession in that time, Ballygarvan basically scored every time they attacked and still led by 2-7 to 0-6. The Shamrocks players were trying hard all through but were contstantly soloing down blind alleys to be met by a wall of red jerseys who drew a line of men across the 45 yard line. It was the same thing over and over again and the Ballygarvan side had the Shamrocks tactics well sussed out -the inside Shamrocks speedsters were denied the space they craved. To further stamp their authority, Ballygarvan broke upfield and scored a quick fire 1-1 to absolutely bury the Shamrocks challenge and season.

Thanks to the managers, selectors and the players for their efforts this year.
