Shamrocks 7-20, Dripsey 7-3
Shamrocks and Dripsey scored a massive 14-23 between them in Shanbally on Wednesday evening but it was Shamrocks who pulled away in the second half to record the 1st round championship win in Rebel Óg East C grade. They now play the winners of Castlelyons and St Catherines in the quarter final at a later date.
Shamrocks were no doubt the better team all through but found it hard to shake off the determined Dripsey challenge, who stayed in touch largely through 4 goals either side of HT. Shamrocks played up the slope in the first half and despite Dripsey scoring an early goal, Shamrocks settled down to dominate and pick off their scores, virtually all from play. They moved into a commanding 3-7 to 1-0 lead coming up to HT but let Dripsey right back into the game by conceding 3 goals in 5 minutes. After playing all the football, Shamrocks were ahead by only a goal at HT, 3-7 to 5-0.
The players got a bit of a chasing at HT from mentors Jed O’Flaherty and Pa Andrews. It worked, but it took 5 minutes for it to kick in as Dripsey incredibly went ahead in the game by scoring 1-1 straight after HT. Shamrocks never panicked and one or two positional switches seemed to work the oracle and Shamrocks got on top all over the field and more importantly started scoring heavily. Inside 10 minutes, the game was over as they tagged on 3-6.
So the first round was negotiated and the players have to take a bow in getting out of a tricky situation. All players made handsome contributions and 7 different players got on the scoreboard. The next game is a football league game away to Clondrohid next Thursday. Clondrohid is about 5 miles beyond Macroom so we’ll have to be leaving Shanbally Cross at 5.30pm. Football Training for u12/u14 continues next Tuesday at 6pm.
