U16 HL V Whitescross – 25/4

Shamrocks 2-8, Whitescross 2-7

This game was played in atrocious weather conditions. It was pouring rain and there were gale force winds for the whole game. It was practically impossible to play any type of hurling what so ever. Some how we managed some lovely points in the first half namely from Andrew O’Grady and Mark Hitchmough. At half time after playing with the wind we lead on a score line of 0-08 to 1-03. The younger u14 players were accounting for themselves very well. Shane Downey at half back was holding his own while Cillian Hayes and Cathal Murphy up front were causing concerns for the Whitescross defence.

We faced the onslaught in the second half but our defence lead by the excellent David Andrews was coping with everything thrown at them. Suddenly a purple patch by Whitescross saw them score 1-04 without reply. We regrouped and when Christopher Hayes found the net after a great move the momentum was back with us.

We were trailing by a point with time running out when we were awarded a penalty. A fine save from the Whitescross keeper lead us to believe that it was not going to be our night. Cormac Scriven was moved out of goal and from a resulting shot that deceived the whole defence the sliotar found the top corner of the net. We were now leading by two points and in injury time. Whitescross added a point from a free to leave us victorious by a point at the final whistle. Full credit must go to both teams that played out an enjoyable game in such woeful conditions.
