Ballinhassig 3-11, Shamrocks 0-11
Shamrocks lost out to Ballinhassig in the Junior A Football League in a game played in Ballinhassig on Sunday afternoon last.
It was a frustrating afternoons work from Shamrocks who had the lions share of possession throughout but couldnt convert that dominance into the required scores. Ballinhassig, on the other hand, made maximum use of their ball and scored almost every time they attacked.
Shamrocks started brightly but the wides count was increasing early on. Shamrocks played with the aid of the breeze in the first half and despite some points from David Hayes, Barry Mulqueen and Stephen Keane early on, they trailed at the break by 2-6 to 0-5, after Ballinhassig had run straight down the middle of the Shamrocks defence to score two vital goals. The goal just before halftime was a real killer goal for Shamrocks who faced a very difficult task in the second half.
Shamrocks tried manfully to get the vital scores needed to make a right game of it but didnt come within a whisker of creating that vital goal chance needed to pull this one out of the fire. Meanwhile, Ballinhassig made hay when they attacked on the few occasions and scored a fortuitous goal past Fergus O’Neill via the post with 15 minutes remaining to open up a 10 point lead. Shamrocks battled on and despite points from Chris O’Neill, Brian Sweeney and a late Alan McCarthy duo, they eventually went down by the 3 goal margin.
Due to St Patricks Day falling on a Monday, training this week is on Tuesday and Thursday night at 7.30pm. With a Junior B team confirmed and the league starting in April, coupled with the A team playing Championship in a few weeks, its time for numbers at training to reach their earlier levels.
