Shamrocks 2-12, Carrigaline 2-10
This was a very competitive game played in splendid conditions at Pairc Tadhg O’h-Ainnlaoi on Bank holiday Monday evening. Throughout the game only a couple of points separated the teams and on a number of occasions the scores were level.
At half-time Shamrocks led 1-5 to 1-3. Brian Cusack scored a great goal before halftime when he first-timed the ball to the net despite being under great pressure. With cousins Barry Mulqueen and Michael Prout showing up well in the backline, Carrigaline were finding it difficult to register scores. Again Michael O’Neill was in great form in goal and that great veteran of yesteryear Dick Andrews, playing at left full back put up the shutters and gave a ‘man of the match display’.
Alan McCarthy and Fergus O’Neill hurled well in the middle of the field with good support coming from Dave O’Neill and David Hayes.
The second half hung in the balance most of the time but Shamrocks desire to win enabled them to push for that vital win at the end. When Stephen Keane was upended heading for goal the resultant penalty was convincingly driven to the Carrigaline net by ‘keeper Michael O’Neill. Stephen O’Neill showed some fine touches and hit one of the winning points with a great strike from his left. Well done to Jason Browne who put in another great hour.
