Shamrocks U15s were guests of both Anglesea Street Fire and Garda Station on Wed 28th Nov. This proved to be a very popular event as the lads got a detailed tour of both stations.
In the Fire Station they broke into two groups and the officer leading one group knew some of the lads from Coolmore Gardens where he resides. He actually told us that he’s fed up getting nut megged every time they play football on the green. We were shown all the modern fire and rescue equipment along with River rescue, road accident and infra red vision equipment. We were then shown an 1950 Fire Engine along with its equipment that has all been restored to pristine condition by the staff of Anglesea Street Fire Station. Special thanks to Barry O’Donovan and the two Wills for their leadership.
Part two of the tour the was a trip to the neighbouring Garda Station. The lads were shown all the administration side of the station first. Then came what proved to a mind blowing experience when two members of the Armed Garda Rapid Response Unit described their line of duty, along with a full display and the operation of the weapons they have at their disposal. These included Teasers, Pepper Spray, Machine Guns, Pistols and other equipment. We then moved on to the Traffic Division and got a full display of all the updated equipment at their disposal to combat all types of road incidents. These included the motor bikes, Garda Cars and the on board cameras and computers that they have. All of us then received a safety pack which included high visibility vests and safety leaflets.
A dinner was then arranged in the dining quarters of the station and special thanks must go to the staff of the canteen for the excellent food and beverages that they provided.
An excellent day was had by all and our special thanks must go to Garda Cathal Collins who organised the whole day including transport, tours and the dinner.
