Carrigaline 1-16, Shamrocks 2-10
Once again Shamrocks turned in a decent display in this league game but once again went away empty handed. The fact that once again Shamrodks had to play the last quarter of the match with 14 players (due to injured players having to go off) certainly didnt help.
Once again Shamrocks were slow to settle and Carrigaline raced into an early 4 points to 1 lead. The rest of the half was even enough but Shamrocks shot 6 wides in that period and they would later regret them misses. Gary Beatty was on free taking duty and he put over a few while he had one goal bound shot expertly saved by the Carrigaline keeper. At the other end the backs were keeping things tight in and around the goal in front of Michael O’Neill, who helped himself to 0-2 throughout the hour from placed balls. Half time Carrigaline led 0-8 to 0-5.
Carrigaline went 4 points up straight from the throw in at the start of the 2nd half but the goal Shamrocks and the game needed arrived shortly afterwards through a first time pull from Gary Beatty. This sparked the game up a notch and it was very competitive from there until the end, neither side getting on top and the scoreboard being kept busy. Carrigaline buried a 21 yard free to move 2 points up with 20 left but Joseph Shanahan (returning from injury) burst through the middle from a breaking ball and scored a great goal and Shamrocks were back in it.
Despite further points from Barry Mulqueen, Michael O’Neill, Joe Shanahan Michael Prout and Fergus O’Neill, the extra man caught up with Shamrocks and Carrigaline scored the last 2 points to run out 3 point winners after a very competitive game. Afterwards, the Shamrocks selectors were reasonably happy with the display, in particular the first touch with is getting slowly better with more training and games. Puck around Tuesday veneing followed by another league game Wednesday away to Ballymartle.
