Clondrohid 5-14, Shamrocks 3-6
Shamrocks were tought a harsh lesson in football out in Clondrohid on Sunday afternoon last, in the Semi Final of the league. Having played in two seperate sections of the league, neither team knew much about the other coming into this game and indeed after 20 minutes, Shamocks led 0-6 to 0-4 and seemed well in this game. However, on such small things can games change and the next 10 minutes were a complete disaster for Shamrocks and in effect it finished the game as a contest.
Shamrocks started brightly and had good scores from play from Patrick Murphy, Alex O’Sullivan, Darragh Scriven and Aonghus Boland. The Clon keeper made a wonderful save from Alex O’Sullivan from the throw in while at the other end, David Raleigh made some vital interceptions at times to deny Clondrohid. However, with Shamrocks leading 0-6 to 0-4 after 20 minutes, they gave away the ball stupidly in the half forward line with a goal and a point for Clondrohid in quick succession being the result. Whatever seemed to happen, the Shamrocks heads hit the floor; another 2 goals and a further 2 points followed up till halftime and that was it – game over in a matter of minutes because of mistakes made.
The Shamrocks mentors brought on all the subs with 25 minutes left as a kind of thank you the 18 players for making the journey all the way down on a dreary Sunday afternoon. Clondrohid’s speed and movement were way too much for Shamrocks from the 20th minute on; as the Shamrocks mentors said to the players afterwards – this is the level that they want the players to aspire to – quick ball into the forwards and less slow, holding up the play type stuff.
The patched up team played with more spirit in the second half and indeed finished strong with goals from Coby O’Grady and Rory Horgan. Some of the players looked dead on their feet during the course of the game and too many of the big name, older players didnt perform on the day.
Next up is another trip to the same place next Sunday for a Hurling Championship (and League) game against the same opposition at 12noon this time next week.
