MCHC V Brian Dillons – 1/8

Brian Dillons 3-13, Shamrocks 0-1

Shamrocks played Brian Dillons in wet conditions in Passage on Thursday night in the championship.

Unfortunately, Shamrocks had only 11 players ready for championship action on the night. Championship at this grade is 12 a side so Dillons played with the man advantage for the whole game. The Shamrocks team consisted of one 18 year old with the rest of the team coming from our under 16 team. No team will win a championship match with this kind of statistic, especially against a team of the calibre of Dillons who had good, strong (and huge) hurlers down the spine of their team. Some of the older Shamrocks minor players just didnt bother their barney turning up – it really is incredible how this mentality exists in anybody, after playing and training earlier on in the year. Its completely unfair on the younger players. Other players were unavailable due to retirements, weddings, holidays and injuries. Its a long list indeed.

Still, the lads on duty tried their heart out and its obvious that the under 16’s in particular have improved their standard of hurling since the start of the year, no doubt about that.

Shamrocks scored first through Andrew O’Grady but that was it for Shamrocks. At HT Dillons led 2-7 to 0-1. The second half the lads again tried their heart out and restricted Brian Dillons somewhat. However, the spare man, their centre back just cleaned up everything and fed the forwards. The young Shamrocks players tried very hard all through.

Thanks to John Twomey (Ringaskiddy), Kevin O’Mahony and Mark Hickey for helping out with the team.

Also, the club wish speedy recoverys to both Brian Coffin and Christopher Hayes who both picked up nasty injuries in the second half of the game.

Team: Cormac Scriven, Shane Kidney, Shane Kelleher, Mark Hitchmough, Coby O’Grady, Brendan Crowley, Brian Coffin, Chris Hayes, Darragh Scriven, Andrew O’Grady and Eric Desmond.

The board have fixed Shamrocks to play football championship next week. The same lads are going to have to try and pick themselves up for that.
