Academy and Schools Coach Return on Friday February 9th and Friday February 2nd

The indoor Academy returns on Friday January 9th and continues every Friday in the NCMI Ringaskiddy at the usual times, 6pm to 8.30pm. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone back as we head into 2024. We had originally planned to return on February 2nd nut circumstances have dictated a slight change of plan.

On Friday, we welcomed back our Schools Coach Anthony Shannon as he took the boys and girls from both Ringaskiddy Lower Harbour National School and Shanbally NS, also in the NMCI. Anthony will work with the schools every three Fridays out of four each month.

Hard luck to the Diarmuid Ó Murchús U21 B footballers who were beaten by Valley Rovers (B) on Monday morning in Camden in the championship, losing out eventually on a scoreline of Valley Rovers 7-14 , Diarmuid Ó Murchús 3-7

Underage AGM – 8/2

The Underage AGM took place on Thursday February 8th  in the Grace McCarthy Rooms, Clubhouse in Shanbally.

This was the biggest attendance in years and a wide range of topics were discussed. Outgoing officers Lisa, Pa and Peter presented their Chairpersons, Secretaries and Treasurer reports respectively.

A full discussion on all aspects of the club took place with at all times the contributions being well met. The vibe from the meeting was wholly positive and everyone cannot wait to get started. All teams managements are set and we’re ready to go.

Thanks to all who contributed in 2023 and well done to the new incoming officers for 2024, who are listed below. Best of luck to them all. Games and fixtures will be out soon.

Start of Academy – 9/2

The boys #FUN ACADEMY made a return on Friday night with football. We will continue every Friday night indoors up until March 22nd.
A great turnout. Thanks to all the parents for negotiating the new registration system on Foirean which is now the way to go for all GAA registrations. Thanks to Dee for her huge efforts in helping set this up.

Thanks to our dedicated coaches, to some of our new U6s with John, to Dee and Hannah and to the parents for the usual support.

E also had a visit from our local GDC Mick Daly who is the full time coach in the region for clubs and schools. Great to see Mick take time out (and visit hhis old haunt the NMCI 🙂

Hurling next week.

New Portable Floodlights – Feb 2024

Shamrocks recently purchased a new set of floodlights for ALL teams in the club – adult, juvenile and Ladies Shamrocks Ladies Gaelic Football Club

Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Jimmy, Denis and John (local businesses), we were in a position to get these set up for the dark winter/early spring months to enable our teams to prepare for the season ahead.

They consist of 8 portable Rite Light floodlights which are battery powered.

The first session using the new lights was a football session with the U16s on Wednesday night (pictured below) and everyone seemed to enjoy the session with no complaines regarding the level of visibility.

We hope that our players get the maximum out of them going forward. Na Seamróga abú

U16 HL V Nemo Rangers – 3/3

Nemo Rangers 1-11, Shamrocks 0-8

The 16s hurlers got their season off to a start on Sunday in Trabeg and despite a great second half, the HT defecit was too much to overcome. Shamrocks were lethargic in the first half and were behind at HT, 1-9 to 0-2.

A chat at HT brought a much better second half display for this young team but time ran out in the end.

Winning Lotto Presentation – 26/2

Pictured below is the recent Winner (from 26/2/24) of the Shamrocks Lotto, Mr Kieran Crowley  being presented with his winning cheque from Donna O’Grady (of the FBI in Ringaskiddy where the ticket was bought) and John Twomey (Club Chairperson). Enjoy your winnings Mannix!

Shamrocks Coaching Workshop – 6/3

We had a big turnout at our in house Coaching Workshop on Wednesday night in Ringaskiddy Community Centre.
Our own Jason Browne and Mick Daly GDC delivered a very helpful session built around best practice for warmups, training and matches.

This was our first ever workshop in house and we hope to do more into the future.

Our thanks to a selection of our u14s who stood in and helped Jason and Mick with the session. It ultimately will be of benefit to our players via our coaches.

Underage Table Quiz – March 22nd

Thanks to all who took part in our FUN Table Quiz on Friday night at the Shamrock Bar. The underage ran the event to help raise funds for the NAtional Schools Training Programme 2023/2024, the cost of which runs into 4 figures.

Fear a’ Tí for the eveing Brendan Barratt had everyone on their toes with the questions and there wwas a wide range of coirect and “incorrect” answers, lots of them from the bar!.

Thanks to the Shamrocks Bar and their staff for hosting, to Lisa who did a whole pile of work in the lead up to the night, to Dee and her daughter Hannah who came straight from the Academy to correct the answers, to our participants on the night and to our many sponsors and indeed members who donated spot prizes for the successful raffle.

A great night was had bay all and a dent was made into the schools coaching fee.

We are actively looking for sponsors to help us alleviate the cost of same in the schools year 2024/2025. Shamrocka as a club are putting the children of the parish who engage in Gaelic Games first and any help would be appreciated and welcome.

JAHL V Belgooly – 24/3

Belgooly 2-17, Shamrocks 1-13

Shamrocks lost their first hurling league game of the season on Sunday. The pitch in Shanbally passed a pitch inspection but the conditions were heavy and damp all through. Belgooly led 2-10 to 0-8 at HT and held on in the second half.

Shamrocks were short a few. They gave away 2 soft goals in the first half but the managemnet were pleased with the workrate and the attitude especially in the second half. Andrew O’Grady, Seán Andrews, Nathan Hayes and Seanán Collins were best for Shamrocks on the day.

U14 FL V Kilmacabea – 30/3

Shamrocks 5-5, Kilmacabea 0-2

Shamrocks made the long trip to Leap to play Kilmacabea on Saturday afternoon. They came away with the convincing win.

Originally a home game, with the Shanbally pitch closed, Shamrocks had to travel.

With a very young team indeed with most of the players at U12, they produced a great display to win convincingly by 5-4 to 0-2.

Well done to all on travelling all the way to West Cork and starting off the season on a winning note. Thanks to the coaches Darragh, Hugh and Derek who took the team, also to the parents who drove the team, including Lisa who sent on a few photos

April 2024

U16 HL V Tracton – 1/4

Tracton 2-15, Shamrocks 0-9

Shamrocks U16s hurlers travelled to Minane Bridge on Monday evening after giving up home advantage due to Shanbally being closed. Shamrocks, missing a few players due to injuries and players away along with players not starting after long layoffs, were up against it.

It was plain to see Tracton had a lot more work done on the hurling side of things than the Shamrocks lads, but they battled hard the whole game through. It has been a very tough start to the season, with training very limited due to the weather. Tracton winning out on a scoreline of 2-15 to 0-9. This, however, was a good workout for our lads, and hopefully, the weather picks up so they can get regular training in.

DÓM U18 MHL V Grenagh – 3/4

Grenagh 3-14, Ó Murchús 3-9

The Minor hurlers of Ó Murchús were beaten by Grenagh on Wednesday evening in Camden in the league.

Conditions were tough as our Winter extends into mid April this year. Ó Murchús led by 2-3 to 1-3 midway through the first half but a scoring burst from Grenagh put them 4 points up at HT.

They were never led thereafter; the closest Ó Murchús came to them was 2 points down with 8 minutes left but Grenagh held on for the win.

Scorers for Ó Murchús : Cian Lynch 1-5 (frees) , Ruairc Sisk 1-0, Conor Mansfield 1-0, Sam Foy 0-2, Barry O’Mahony 0-1

U8 Monster Hurling Blitz – 13/4

Well done the U8 hurlers who had 2 teams in action on the 4G pitch in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday morning, thanks to all the players, parents and coaches on some great performances from the lads against Whitechurch’s two teams and Killeagh as well.

U12 FL V Crosshaven – 14/4

Crosshaven 6-5, Shamrocks 5-4

Well played everyone in a Shamrocks jersey it wasn’t to be on the day but the lads never gave up trying and kept going till the final whistle.

The final score was Crosshaven 6:05, Shamrocks 5:04 in what was a great game from 2 committed teams. They had a slow start, Crosshaven built up a lead but Shamrocks finished very strong but ran out of time in the end.

Shamrocks will all learn and improve from that performance, the players certainly didnt give up and payed some excellent football against a very good Crosshaven team; the coaches were very positive after the game, as they should be. ☘️☘️

U16 HL V Whitechurch – 15/4

Shamrocks 1-12, Whitechurch 1-9

Shamrocks made the long trip to Whitechurch a winning one on Monday evening with a close 3 point win over the home team

DÓM U18 HL V Nemo Rangers – 17/4

Ó Murchús 1-18, Nemo Rangers 0-19

This was a good win for the Minor Hurlers of Ó Murchús in Nemo on a cold April Wednesday night in Trabeg. It was a very exciting game of hurling with the teams being level 5 times throughout the game.

Nemo led by 0-13 to 0-9 at HT and were looking good at that point. Eight minutes into the second half, Nemo were still ahead by 0-16 to 0-12; Sam Foy struck for a goal for Ó Murchús to give them hope and bring them within a point. They then followed that up with another point to level the game. The next 5 minutes saw both teams add on 2 point each as the finish approached but Ó Murchús went 1-17 to 0-18 ahead and held on for the win in the end.

Scorers: Cian Lynch (0-5 from frees), Barry O’Mahony (0-4 from frees and 65s), Ruairc Sisk (0-5 from play), Sam Foy (1-1 from play), Josh Bartlett (0-3 from play)

U18 Hurlers V Nemo on Wed Apr 17th (They wore Crosshaven jerseys on this occasion due to a clash with Nemo)

JAHL V Ballinhassig – 18/4

Shamrocks 2-12, Ballinhassig 0-16

Shamrocks battled to the win in the HL on Thursday night in Shanbally. For long spells, it looked like Ballinhassig would win but Shamrocks just would not go away and put themselves into every challenge and eventually capped a marvellous comeback win 2 late points to get the vital 2 league points.

Ballinhassig played with the very strong breeze in the first half but Shamrocks were up for the fight. The half time score read Ballinhassig 0-9, Shamrocks 0-5; this gave Shamrocks a fighting chance turning to play with the (decreasing) wind. There were a lot of good performances in that half with Michael O’Neill very tidy in goal, Fionn Herlihy playing a lot of ball at centre back and Sean Andrews showing well up front.

Ballinhassig enjoyed a good 15 minutes into the wind after the restart. Seán Andrews had initially scored the Shamrocks goal when he burrowed his way through 2 Ballinhassig defenders to slap the ball beyond the keeper to give Shamrocks hope. Ballinhassig responed with 5 points on the trot and they looked well set for the win. Shamrocks however, had different ideas. A total rejig up front signalled their intent to go for it. Mark Hitchmough and Cathal Kidney formed a new full forward line with Andrews going to the wing. It worked.

Sam Foy scored a beauty from play. Andrews put over a few frees, Kidney pointed after he dispossessed the full back, Hitchmough was winning possession in the air and when a high ball dropped in around the square, Mark was fouled in possession. Seán Andrews slotted the penalty with 1 minute to go and Shamrocks were ahead by a point.

Ballinhassig had a chance to score at the other end but put a free wide. To finish it off, Seán Andrews put a sideline over from right on the 45 yard line for what was an unlikely but deserved Shamrocks win.

M. O’Neill, K. May, D. Barry, G. Ronayne, J. Tuohy, F. Herlihy, T. Murphy, N. Hayes, M. Hitchmough, S. Foy, C. Kidney, C. O’Grady, C. Hayes, S. Andrews, C. O’Donovan. Sub used – D. Scriven

DÓM U18 HL V Passage – 18/4

Ó Murchús 4-26, Passage 2-19

Ó Murchús finally got to play this game away to Passage after it had been called off on a few occasions due to unplayable pitches.

This was their second win in the space of three nights with a great display against Passage.

DÓMs led from the 4th minute onwards and really never looked back. They really pushed on in the lead up to HT with a flurry of points and a goal and this gave them a 2-15 to 1-11 lead at HT in a high scoring game of hurling.

Passage brought the lead back to 3 points on 35 minutes but Ó Murchús stepped up a gear and added 6 quick points to open up a comfortable lead which they added to late on with a few goals. All Ó Murchús scores came from play bar 0-3.

Well done to all on a successful week on the hurling field.

Scorers – Cian Lynch (1-9, 0-1 free), Ruairc Sisk (1-4), Josh Bartlett (2-1), Barry O’Mahony (0-4, 0-2 frees), Sam Foy (0-3), Donal Herlihy (0-3), Cathal O’Donovan (0-1), Eogahn O’Sullivan (0-1)

Cork West U17s in Shanbally – 20/4

Saturday April 20th was a big day for David Herlihy and his family as he captained Cork West U17 hurlers in Shanbally against Limerick.

The pitch was looking great in the sunshine. Cork eventually lost the game 1-15 to 1-11 but David played very well in goal, keeping a clean sheet in the first half and pulling off a wonderful save at one point that “i got a touch to it alright” was deflected onto the crossbar and was eventually cleared to safety. David was replaced at HT for the other keeper to get gametime, which is how the Cork teams operate at his level.

Well done David, mighty stuff. Thanks to all who helped out on what was a beautiful afternoon for outdoor activity, both teams and supporters were fed and watered from our kitchen (Dee & Ann) before they left.

David Herlihy Capt of West Cork in Shanbally Apr 20th 2024

U12 HL V Ballinhassig – 21/4

Ballinhassig 5-5, Shamrocks 0-3

Ballinhassig proved too strong for Shamrocks in Shanbally on Sunday morning. Shamrocks had a very young team out and had to play four under 10s. This is not the ideal situation to be in, especially against a hurling first club like Ballinhassig

U16 FL V Crosshaven – 22/4

Crosshaven 3-13, Shamrocks 3-12

A one point win for Crosshaven in Camden on Monday night in the bright sunshine.

Hard luck to our boys in what was an amazing game of football from both teams; unfortunately Shamrocks scoring burst late on proved 1 point too short.

This was the U16s first football game of the season (postponments) and no doubt results will improve as the year goes on. It was great to see such a big turnout of players as well

U14 FL V Kilmichael – 23/4

Kilmichael 6-5, Shamrocks 5-7
Yet another agonising one point away loss, this time for our young U14 footballers in Kilmichael on Tuesday night.
Final score after a great battle, Kilmichael 6-5, Shamrocks 5-7.

Thanks to all for traveling all the way to Mid Cork on a weekday evening.

The lads play Championship on Friday night, once again away, this time in Kilbrittain. Hopefully this will have them primed for action

DÓM U18 FL V Mayfield – 24/4

Ó Murchús 4-11, Mayfield 1-10

Another good win for the Diarmuid Ó Murchus U18 footballers, this time at home to Mayfield in Shanbally.

Mayfield presented a stiff challenge in the first half and led 1-4 t 0-6 at HT. Cian Lynch fired over a few points in that half after good build up play from out the field.

Ó Murchús got a dream start to the second half and scored 2-1 inside the first 5 minutes to take firm contol of the game. They added a further 2 goals and ran out winners on a scoreline of 4-11 to 1-10

Cian Lynch slots his first goal

U14 FC V Kilbrittain – 26/4

Shamrocks 4-3, Kilbrittain 3-5

Following on from an agonising one point loss on Monday night away in Kilmichael, our young U14 team were involved in another 1 point away game, this time in the championship in Kilbrittain this time.

For once this week, Shamrocks came out on the right side of the scoreline which sets them up nicely for the rest of the season. Well done to all who played, coached and travelled to West Cork

JAFL V Courcey Rovers – 27/4

Courcey Rovers 2-6, Shamrocks 0-8

Courcey Rovers took the league points on offer in Shanbally on Saturday evening in the football league. Both sides can claim they deserved to win as many chances went abegging on both sides, in Shamrocks case the inability to convert lots of possession into meaningful scoring chances. They met with stiff Courcey Rovers resistance and a swarming defence that got back in droves to support their sweeper. Shamrocks just couldnt work the ball into dangerous positions enough to get even a draw.

Shamrocks were on top early on and led by 0-2 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. Courcey Rovers then broke for a goal with their first attack. Shamrocks were on the back foot for the next while and were lucky that Courcey Rovers hadnt brought with them a place kicker as they missed numerous easy frees and some 45s. Meanwhile Shamrocks capitalised on this and slotted over some beauties on the run up to HT including three straight from play courtesy of Andrew O’Grady and a lovely point from Mark Hitchmough off his left foot while being fouled. Shamrocks led by 0-5 to 1-0 at HT.

Courcies replied with two quick points after HT and it was level again. The teams traded points before Cian O’Flahery scored a lovely point from play to edge Shamrocks ahead with 15 minutes to play. There followed a scoreless 8 or 9 minutes before Courcey Rovers, after absorbing all the Shamrocks attacking play, broke up the field and scored 1-2 in the space of 2 minutes to win the game with 5 minutes left. Mark Hitchmough scored a Shamrocks point from play to bring it to a goal but they didnt create anything resembling a chance and that was it.

This was the lads first game in a long time and they know that they are not far off it with plenty of time to get things right.

DÓM U18 HL V Aghabullogue – Bealltainn

Aghabullogue 1-15, Diarmuid Ó Murchús 2-10

The long trip to Coachford ended in a 2 point defeat for Ó Murchús hurlers on Wednesday evening. Ó Murchús led by 3 points after 17 minutes but Aghabullogue came back into it and drew level by HT, Aghabullogue 0-9, Ó Murchús 1-6 before Ó Murchús nudged in front at the half time whistle with a point.

Aghabullogue went in front and wrestled control of the game away from Ó Murchús in the 13 minutes after HT when they scored 1-4 to Ó Murchús 0-1. They held the lead to the end, despite an Ó Murchús goal with 11 minutes to go.

Scorers for Ó Murchús – Cian Lynch 1-4, Ruairc Sisk 1-2, Senan Buckley 0-1, Donal Herlihy 0-1, Shane O’Flynn 0-1, Josh Bartlett 0-1.

U12 HL V Sliabh Rua – 5/5

Sliabh Rua 4-6, Shamrocks 0-4

Hard luck to our under 12 hurlers who put in a brave dsiplay in defeat against a strong Sliabh Rua team in Belgooly on Sunday morning; all the players gave it their all on the day.

U15 Féile Football Qualifiers – 6/5

Shamrocks V Ballygarvan and Owen Gaels

The U15 Footballers have qualified for the finals of the Féile Football (Group 6) in Cork which will be held at the end of June. They topped their group in Ballygarvan on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.

The scores in the two 15 minute a side games were –
Game 1: Shamrocks 5-3, Ballygarvan 1-2

Game 2 – Shamocks 4-2, Owen Gaels 2-4

These were two very contrasting games; Shamrocks they built up a handy lead against Ballygarvan early on by going for goals and were comfortable winners in the end.

The second game was much tougher indeed with both teams getting six scors each but the ability of the Shamrocks main men to link up and score vital goals at important times enabled them to go through as group winners after a close 30 minutes for football.

The panel on the day were (in numerical order) –

1. Jack Whelton, 2. Billy Hanna, 3. Ryan Doolan, 4. Shane O Meara, 5. Shane O Flynn, 6. Seamus O Mahony, 7. Michael Dorney, 8. Ryan Barrett, 9. Calum O Neill, 10, Ollie O Brien, 11. Callum Fitzgerald, 12. Donal Herlihy, 13. Sean Og Lynch, 14. Danny Field, 15. Sam Jordan, 16. James Dorney, 17. Alex Ó’Brien, 18. Paddy Keane, 19. James Keane, 20. Eanna Boland

DÓMs U18 FL V Douglas 2 – 6/5

Another good result for Diarmuid Ó Murchús u18 footballers on Monday evening. They beat Douglas (2) by 4-16 to 0-5 in an accomplished performance in Camden.

An early goal set them on their way and another scoring burst mid way through the first half gave them a 3-6 to 0-4 lead at halftime.

Ó Murchús kept Douglas to only a point in the second half while they tagged on a few more scores at the other end.

That’s now 4 from 4 in the football league.

Scorers – Cian Lynch 0-7, Joey Middleton 1-1, Josh Bartlett 1-0, Cathal O Donovan 1-0, Shay Murphy 1-0, David Herlihy 0-3, Eoin O’Sullivan, Rory Deane, Donal Herlihy and Shane O’Flynn all 0-1 each

JAHL V Ballymartle – 7/5

Ballymartle 3-13, Shamrocks 0-12

Shamrocks got off to the worst possible start in this league game played in Shanbally; they found themselves down by 2-9 to 0-5 at halftime and facing a big defeat.

Things did improve after the break and they put in a much better display. They had the deficit down to 5 points with seven minutes to go but a late Ballymartle goal put a dampner on that effort.

Shamrocks were short a few on the evening; Seán Andrews was outstanding for Shamrocks and scored each and every one of their 0-12 points, from both frees and play

U16 FL V Douglas (2) – 8/5

Shamrocks 5-20, Ballincollig (2) 1-6

The U16 footballers who beat Ballincollig (2) in Shanbally on Wednesday evening.

It took a while for the team to get going in this one but once they did, they showed what a fine team they can be with some lovely scores. They led at HT by 2-9 to 1-4 following goals from Donal Herlihy (from the very first attach of the game straight up the middle) and Jason O’Driscoll. Luke Jordan was also in fine form in that half before he retired early.

They pulled away in the second half with the subs making a fine contribution, in particular Mark Murphy with a fine 3rd goal to seal trhe win a long ways out. Andrew Phillips was also on fire, popping up in attack time and again from wing back

U14 FC V St James – 9/5

St James 7-12, Shamrocks 2-3

U14 footballers were beaten by a very strong St James in Ardfield in the FC on Thursday evening.

The lads never gave up on yet another long trip to West Cork. They have yet to play a home match this year.

Well done to them and to everyone on travelling on a school night.

Thanks to Lisa for some photos

Defibrillator Course – 11/5

The club had 10 participants do an intensive CPR and Defibrillator Training Course on Saturday morning in the Community Centre in Ringaskiddy.

The club always takes it responsibilities very seriously when it comes to first aid and now with the aid of Peter McDaid and PJ McBride of the local branch of the Irish Red Cross, we have at least 10 members full trained up.

Well done to all and thanks to the two lads for running the course and to Socket for the organising

11:30am – Shamrocks V Valley Rovers. Lost by 5. Bad injury to Donal Herlihy didnt help matters

12:30pm – Shamrocks V Kinsale. As both teams were out, they decided to forgo this one. Valley Rovers went through as winners.

U11 John Kerins Qualifiers – 11/5

Well done to our Under 11s this morning in Ballygarvan.

Because so many were missing, all eleven players had to play all 3 matches in the heat against the other clubs who had way more players, could rotate when they wanted and teh Shamrocks players clearly ran out of steam especially in the second and third games. But they tried their heart out.

They lost to Ballygarvan and Crosshaven and drew with Passage. They are an extremely young team with all bar one (yes ONE) underage again neext year and the experience will stand to them no doubt.
Our thanks to all who took part and to coaches Colm, Colin, David and Darragh for running the team. Also a shout out to the parents for their great support on the bank on a beautiful morning.

No report available and the scoreline says it all – one point in 60 minutes of play. A nightmare afternoon

U12 FL V Ballygarvan – 12/5

Shamrocks 3-6, Ballygarvan 3-1

Well done to the U12 Footballers who beat Ballygarvan on Sunday morning in the FL.
Some great performances especially late on. It was a Cork hurlers like comeback in the last 5 minutes!!!!

They eventually won by 5 points.

Thanks to all who travelled and supported the team

Action from U12 FL V Ballygarvan May 12th 2024

DÓM U18 HL V Ballygarvan – 15/5

Ó Murchús 2-12, Ballygarvan 3-6

Well done to the Minor Hurlers of Ó Murchús who had a close fought victory over neighbours Ballygarvan in Shanbally on Wednesday evening.

It was close all through with a bit of needle in the game with a couple of flashpoints. Ballygarvan led by a point at HT, 1-8 to 1-7, the Ó Murchús goal from Cian Lynch. That git them back into the game after Ballygarvan had opened up a 4 point lead.

Ballygarvan opened up another 4 point lead straight after the HT whistle with a goal. There was only 1 point scored between the 2 teams over the next 20 minutes as both teams went at it.
O’Murchús finally wore down Ballygarvan with a quick fire 1-3 in the space of 3 minutes, the goal courtesy if Ruairc Sisk and Ó Murchús held on for the all important win.

Scorers – Lynch 1-2, Sisk 1-1, Barry O’Mahony 0-4, Sam Foy 0-2, Senan Buckley 0-1, Josh Bartlett 0-1, Cathal O’Donovan 0-1

U8 Football Blitz – 18/5

Well done to the under 8 footballers who played in a Blitz in Belgooly on Saturday morning.

All reports indicate that the 2 teams on duty they were brilliant on the day. They played a total of 6 games against clubs that included Ballinhassig, Passage, Ballygarvan and Courcey Rovers.

Our thanks to all the players who are improving with each passing week due to the Academy and the games – that’s the only way to progress.

Also thanks to the parents and to our coaches who ate putting in the work with the lads.

A high scoring game in Coachford went the way of the home team on Wednesday evening despite a great effort from the Shamrocks lads

U16 FL V Aghabullogue May 22nd 2024

JAHL V Tracton – 23/5

Shamrocks 0-16, Tracton 1-6
This was a good win for the Junior Hurlers in the League on Thursday evening in Minane Bridge.
Shamrocks led 0-9 to 1-5 at HT and a great defensive effort in the second half ensured they collected the 2 league points.
Young Kieran Maye in the breaks stood out as did Fionn Herlihy who was outstanding at centre back. Cillian Hayes 3 points from centre field.
It was a good team effort with excellent work rate throughout the team and the managmnet took great encouragement from the game.

DÓM U18 FL V St Colmscilles – 24/5

St Colmcilles 6-16, Ó Murchús 0-12

A poor enough performance from the Diarmuid Ó Murchús team. They were beaten on the night.

The lads were level up until the 15th minute when the home side pushed on, outscoring Ó Murchús 3-5 to 0-1 in the second quarter to effictively finish off the game as a contest before halftime.

The second half was more of the same with St Colmcilles pushing on with more scores and DÓMs never landed a blow. A game to forget.

Scorers for Ó Murchús – Joey Middleton 0-4, Josh Bartlett 0-2, David Herlihy 0-2, David Cotter 0-2, Ruairc Sisk and Cian Lynch 0-1 each

U14 FC V Béal Átha a’Ghaorthaidh

Shamrocks 9-11, Béal Átha 4-4

The 14s finally got to play a home match on Friday evening and it resulted in a win. They welcomed Cumann Peile Béal Áthan Ghaorthaidh who travelled from an Ghaeltacht Mhuscraí.

The Shamrocks lads got down to business straight away and went on an all out attack and scored three early goals, two from Eanna Boland.

They tagged on a few more scores while their tails were up and went in at halftime with a comfortable lead, after being assisted with the (smelly) wind in the first half

Béal an Átha came much more into the game sa tarna leath but couldnt get back the deficit that Shamrocks had built up and the Shamrocks lads powered on to a win, ceann a bhí tuillte acu.

Well done to all the players who togged off in the sunshine with a good turnout ready for action in the Uaine agus Bán jerseys!

Well done the Junior footballers who beat Carrigaline in the league on Sunday afternoon.

The win was built on a big half back line performance from Nathan Hayes, Fionn Herlihy and Sean Andrews.

Alan Mac at midfield showed up well as did Mark Hitchmough and Cathal Collins in the forwards

It was a solid and well rounded team performance. Well done to all

U14s in FL and Championship acion recently

The u14s footballers had 2 great win recently in league and championship

Firstly, they travelled to Kilmichael (again) and turned in a great hours football, winning on a scoreline of 3-5 to 2-6. Goals from Patrick Keane, Fionn Behan and James Dorney, with points from Sam Jordan, Harry O’Neill, Ryan Collins and Seanán Quinn.

They then doubled up 2 days later with hoe game against Uibh Laoire (Iveleary) and once again, a great team performance gave them the win, 2-5 to 2-3

U10s/U9s in recent action

Well done to our under 10s/U9s who played a couple of games recntly as well, once against Nemo Rangers in football and in hurling against Ballygarvan. There was a great turnout on both nights, well done to the players, coaches and the parents.

U8s Blitz in Ballygarvan – 8/6

Well done to the U8s boys who played in Ballygarvan on Saturday Jun 8th in the swelterig heat, 12 togged and they all played 6 games each, they are inproving each week

U14 HC V Ballygarvan – 14/6

Ballygarvan 7-5, Shamrocks 4-6

A great effort from a very determined Shamrocks team came up just short in a great game of hurling in Ballygarvan on Friday evening.

Ballygarvan led by 3 points at HT and Shamrocks battled away in the second half, never giving Ballygarvan an inch and turned in a very courageous performance indeed, well done young men.

Thanks to our players, coaches and supporters on what was a very encouraging performance.

U10/U9 FL V Eire Óg – 20/6

Well done to the under 10/9 footballers who turned out in force to play Eire Óg in Shanbally on Blitz style football games on Thursday evening, they all played great football, so well done to all players and coaches.

They continue at the Academy every Friday night and play Ballygarvan next Tuesday in football and Tracton in hurling next Friday so its busy time for them as they head into the summer holidays from school

Thanks in particular to the parents and to the coaches Colm, David, Keith and Shane for organising Thursday nights 3 teams who all played 3 games each ☘️☘️☘️

They are pictured below after an exhausting hours football!

U10-U9 FL Blitz V Eire Óg 20.6.24

JAFL V Ballygarvan – 20/6

Ballygarvan 4-12, Shamrocks 1-4

A powerful Ballygarvan performance on Thursday evening in Shanbally. They scored 2 goals within a minute after the 15th minute, which was actually the first scores of the game as Shamrocks had resisted up to that point, and they pushed on after that to a big score.

From a Shamrocks point of view, the scoreline was unfair on their efforts with many of the younger players in partiular showing up well with plenty of positives to take from the game.

JAFL V Valley Rovers – 23/6

Valley Rovers 3-18, Shamrocks 0-7

Not a good day at the office for Shamrocks in their last league game before championship. The game was over after 15 minutes as Valleys led 1-7 to 0-2 and they were attacking at will and opening up Shamrocks at all angles. They pushed on and led 2-10 to 0-4 at HT.

A depleted Shamrocks did improve somewhat after the break but in reality, this was 60 minutes of shooting practice for the Valleys team

Lots of work ahead before championship starts in July – against the exact same team!!! Its been a mixed campaign for the footballers so far with some nice wins but this week has been depressing with 2 hammerings.

Not many positives from a sobering display on Sunday – Stephen Hurley in goal was outstanding and only for him it would have been 7 or 8; Johnny Tuohy and Gary Ronayne made some nice interceptions at times; the ever dependable Mark Hitchmough scored some wonderful points from play; nobody got injured and the sun was shining

U12 FL V Lee Gaels – 24/6

Shamrocks 4-16, Lee Gaels 2-3

The U12 footballers had a solid outing away to Lee Gaels (Dripsey/Gleann na Laoi), winning by 4-13 to 2-4, they had lots of good passing movements and plenty of different players got on the scoreboard: well done to the players, parents and coaches

U10/U9 F Blitz V Ballygarvan – 25/6

Well done to our combined under 10 and under 9s who played some great football away to Ballygarvan on Tuesday evening; they all played 2 games each and did themselves proud.

They are out again on Friday, this time hurling away to Tracton, all hands on deck

The U18 hurlers of Diarmuid Ó Murchús got back into action after the State Examinations on Wednesday evening. They made a winning return and did it in style.

This was an accomplished performance throughout the team built on a brilliant first half display after which they led by 3-7 to 0-1.

They tagged on more scores in the second half to get a good start to the second part of their season, well done to all

Scorers : Cian Lynch 2-4, Joey Middleton 2-0, Sam Foy 0-4, Donal Herlihy 1-0, David Herlihy 0-2, Kieran May, Josh Bartlett, Barry O Mahony, Eoghan O Sullivan all 0-1

U10/U9 HL V Tracton – 28/6

Well done to the u10/U9s who played Tracton in Minane Bridge on Friday evening in challenge games.

All players played 3 periods of 15 minutes each and this sets this particular group up nicely for Club Chiaráin next week where it’ll be hurling all week – they’ll be even better this time next week.

Our thanks to all the players, parents (good crew there on the night) and coaches Colm, David, Shane Behan, Colin, Darragh and Lisa who also helped out.

U7 Monster Hurling Blitz – 29/6

Well done to our U7 hurlers who got game time in a blitz in Crosshaven on Saturday morning., They played some carrigaline teams and Ballinhassig and really got stuck in and played some great hurling.

Thanks to the players for their efforts, parents and to the coaches Seán, Gavin and Paul. (Photos to follow) ☘️☘️

They are out again next Thursday July 4th as they play in another blitz in Páirc Uí Chaoimh as well as taking part in Club Chiaráin so a busy few days upcoming for them.

U14 FC Final V St James – 30/6

St James 3-8, Shamrocks 2-0

Hard luck to our players who by all accounts, played very well against an extremely strong St James team. Shamrocks were only a point down with 15 minutes left but St James finished strong.

Shamrocks lost nothing in defeat.

JAHL V Kilbrittain – 30/6

Kilbrittain 3-12, Shamrocks 3-11

This was really tough on the Junior Hurlers. A win and they made the semi finals of the league. They fought very hard all through but found it impossible get anything going on the free count – it was easily 4:1 in Kilbrittains favour, probably more.

Shamrocks played up the pitch and against a breeze in the first half. They led by 1-6 to 1-5 at half time,  a brilliant Mark Hitchmough goal cancelling out a Kilbrittain goal at the other end.

Kilbrittain did control the third quarter and moved into a 5 point lead at one stage 3-9 to 2-7 (Shamrocks goal from Sam Foy, 2-3 from play from wing forward). But the young Shamrocks team refused to bend and fought their way back with more scores from Mark Hitchmough, Sam Foy, Darragh nScriven and an Alan Mac fre.  They deserved a draw but unfortunately, and going exactly with the trend of the game, the referee awarded Kilbrittain a scorable winning free which they slotted over to win the game.

A disappointing end for Shamrocks after such a great display. Way more positives than negatives on the day but one thing stood out – the performances of the younger players coming out of and still playing minor – they were outstanding and you add in the 10 players missing to that team, they can all look forward with confidence to the championship which begins in early August.

Club Chiaráin – Day 1 (July 1st)

When the calendar turns to July, in Shamrocks that means only one thing – our annual summer Hurling Training Club/Camp for the boys and girls of our club.

And so it was on Monday morning, under grey skies but a dry sod, that Club Chiaráin officially started. With nearly 90 of our young boys and girls at the ready, things got started and it was FUN. Thats the only way to describe out. FRom 5 year olds up to 13 year olds, the ash was swinging, there were a few belts and knocks, but everyone went home with a smile on their face.

The ancillary  staff will be mentioned later in the week but they made sure everything was in order with gear, food (no sausages left at breaktime), hurleys and helmets for anyone that needed them. The (fully qualified and vetted) coaches will rotate each day so for today, we thank Carol and Ronan, Andy, Ailbhe and Síomha, Gary and Hannah, Ronan and Rachel, Pa and Socket, Alannah and Ellie and John Herlihy NT and Kieran.

Big turnout of Shamrocks players and coaches once again – everyone is having fun and thanks to our kitchen staff Mairéad and Dee who kept everyone fed and watered.

Make sure everyone combs their hair, puts on their greenest Shamrocks gear and practises ther smile as we’ll have a photographer with us on Wednesday.

U16 FL V Ballinora – 2/7

Ballinora 4-15, Shamrocks 3-12

Hard luck to the U16 footballers who played their first game in the second half of the season in Ballinora on Wednesday evening, they lost our by 4-15 to 3-12 in a brilliant game of football.

Ballinora dominated the first half and had a very healthy lead at HT, 3-8 to 1-3. A few words at half time produced an inspired second half transformation from Shamrocks who thundered into the game. Then Seamus O’Mahony at center back got a belt, had to go off and this totally burst the Shamrocks momentum – Ballinora ran out winners but not after a mighty Shamrocks effort.

Club Chiaráin – Day 4

Another great day of FUN at Club Chiaráin with Gaelic Football being on the menu on Thursday. Plenty of laughter and the atmosphere and vibe was so positive today up the Track.

We even had THREE birthdays – all celebrated in style with cake

Our thanks to our coaches Carol & Rona, Paul & Ailbhe, David & Cathal, Ronan, Maura & Sharon, Pa, Socket & Hannah, Síomha, Ellie & Alannah, John and Kieran. Fantaastic work guys and gals!!!

We will finish off a wonderful week tomorrow with the “Game from the Gods” as one of our coaches said earlier in the week. On Friday, we might even have a special guest or two!

Club Chiaráin 2024 came to a close on Friday with day 5. It was a magnificent and highly successful week.

As is tradition, John Herlihy ran his annual Poc Fada competitions for all the participants and we thank John for this great jesture in providing trophies for the winners and finalists.

The clash of the Ash went quiet around midday as yet amother tradition, the visit of the ice cream van, took place. The camáns were tossed aside as everyone, on the field and off it, were treated to a large ice cream after a fantastic weeks work.

As always – EVERYONE went home happy !

U16 HL V Douglas 2 – 8/7

Shamrocks 2-8, Douglas (2) 1-7

This was a good win for the 16s hurlers in Shanbally on Monday night as they continue their solid league campaign.

This was a hard fought win against Douglas 2. Eventhough it was the visitors second team, it was clear from early on that every one of them could hurl, especially in the forwards so the result in the end was pleasing.

It really was a slog in the conditions. This were about as far from mid July as you could get – constant driving rain, strong Easterly breeze, wet ball on a rock hard slippy surface and it was so dark, that they had to change from a white to a yellow sliotar in the first half to enable everyone to see the ball.
Shamrocks were only 2 points up at HT 1-5 to 1-3 at the break, Luke Jordan with the goal. Jordan was excellent up front and had to carry the scoring burden all night with Calum O’Neill.

However, playing against the wind in the second half, they upped their game considerably and dominated the second half. to run out deserved winners on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-6 when scores were hard to come by.

Donal Herlihy poked home the deciding goal with 13 minutes left to open a 6 point lead and Calum Fitz in goal and the back held out with some good saves and defending.

It was an exhibition game as part of the Cork City Athletics Triathlon which Páirc Ui Chaoimh are hosting this weekend.
The Glen led by 3-6 to 1-6 at HT but Shamrocks turned it on in the second half and ran out winners by 3-14 to 3-11 in the end. Well done to all on a good performance

U16 FL V Blarney – 15/7

Shamrocks 0-12, Blarney 1-6

This was an important win for Shamrocks in the scramble to qualify for a playoff place in the Div 1 league. Shamrocks moved to second in the with the hard fought win but as many as EIGHT clubs can finish in the top two at this point. Its a very competitive league, just like this game was.

Shamrocks should have won by more. To be more specific, they should have been more than 0-10 to 0-4 ahead at half time. They completely dominated possession and had some glorious chances in front of goal but unfortunately, they left their  shooting boots at home; easily kicking double figure wides throughout the hour but thats something that can be corrected. Plenty of attacks broke down as well close in on goal in what was largely a frustrating first half, before a three point scoring burst before the break gave them more of a cushion.

Their profligary in front of goal in the first half nearly cost them. Blarney scored 1-1 straight from the throw in at the start of the second half. There followed 10 scoreless minutes before Blarney brought it back to a one point game, 0-10 to 1-6 with 13 minutes left. The game was there for either team to win. Shamrocks dug in and scored a wonderful point  in the 17th minute of the second half, their first score in that period. This was followed by another from a free to give them a three point lead with 8 minutes to go.

The hits were going in and both teams were up for it at this point. But the teams cancelled each other out in that last 8 minutes plus the 2 of injury time and that suited Shamrocks perfectly as they just about held onto the 3 point margin. They can also thank the Shamrocks goalkeeper goal who made 3 excellent blocks, one in particular two thirds of the way through the second half when Blarney were looking for the equaliser

Well done to all for digging in on a wet night against good opposition.

Well done to our U7 hurlers who played in a Carrigdhoun Monster Hurling Blitz on Thursday evening.

It was sweltering with the heat on the 4K pitch in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Shamrocks had 2 teams and played 3 games each against different teams like Kinsale, Crosshaven, Courcey Rovers and Tracton. All players did brilliant, they improved immensely as the night went on. Special mention to Zoe & Aoife who played in goals to make up the five a side.

Thanks to the parents, to the coaches Ian, Derek and Pa and of course to our great players.

A 2 point loss in a very good quality game throughout

U16 FC/FL V Passage – 29/7

Shamrocks 4-11, Passage 3-12

An excellent result for our U16 footballers this evening in an exciting championship game against our formidable opponents, Passage.

Shamrocks playing into the wind started well, but the poor shooting at goal kept the visitors in the game. Halftime score was Shamrocks 2-3 Passage 1-8. With the wind in the second half Shamrocks started to move the ball much faster and took control but again left Passage back into the game.

It was a much tighter finish than it should’ve been . Shamrocks winning on a scoreline of 4-11 to 3-12

JAFC V Valley Rovers – 28/7

Valley Rovers 2-12, Shamrocks 0-9

A few injuries mid game didnt help Shamrocks who tried very hard all game. They conceded a goal with the first attack and went in at HT down 1-7 to 0-4.

JAHC V Kinsale – 4/8

Kinsale 4-17, Shamrocks 1-13

Shamrocks were beaten in Round 1 of the hurling championship in Belgooly on Sunday afternoon in wet conditions.

They now face an uphill battle to get out of the group

U16 HC V Tracton – 5/8

Tracton 1-16, Shamrocks 2-11

A decimated Shamrocks team due to holidays and injuries travelled with 13 players to Minane Bridge this evening and had to play the full Tracton 15 for the entire match.

Each Shamrock player ran their hearts out for the entirety of the game. Trailing 0-7 to 0-6 at halftime they entered the 2nd half full of confidence.

Tracton upped the intensity and pulled into an 8 point lead. Never letting their heads drop Shamrocks scored 1-4 without reply. However it was not to be at the end with Tracton winning by 2 points.

This really was a huge effort from the players on duty. Certainly, the future is bright given this performance on Monday night. The players were outstanding

They have 2 more games to play in the round Robin and can look forward with confidence to those
