St Vincents 7-9, Shamrocks 2-10
Just one look at the scoreline sums up the U16 D3 final in Ballygarvan on Wednesday evening. St Vincents were able to find the back of the Shamrocks net on multiple occasions while at the other end, Shamrocks could not find the Vincents net. Vincents had their first goal after 1 minute and this was a pattern repeated a further 4 times in the first 17 minutes. At this point the game was practically over as they opened up the Shamrocks defence almost at will. Shamrocks were chasing the game throughout without ever getting within 6 points. To a man, they never gave up and battled hard against a strong Vincents team who could all play ball. However, the scores that they craved didnt come.
At HT, Vincents led 5-3 to 2-6, Cian O’Flaherty and Philip Dorney with the Shamrocks goals along with some superb points from Shane Darcy. Shamrocks needed a fast start to the second half but Vincents asserted their authority with a couple of quick points. Again, without ever troubling the Vincents keeper, Shamrocks battled on but it was always going to be a case of playing out the match – St Vincents were in cruise control all the way to the finish.
The Shamrocks players can be proud of their efforts and were beaten by an excellent footballing team on the night. Thanks to them for their efforts and to the parents who have supported them. Its important that this team stays together for later in the year (league semi final) and next year and beyond because they’re are good footballers on this panel. Also thanks to the vocal Shamrocks support who got behind the lads before the 3 goal blast from Vincents in the first half that killed the game.
