JAHC Quarter Final V Valley Rovers – 26/7

Valley Rovers 3-11, Shamrocks 2-8

When the final whistle was blown in Ballygarvan Valley Rovers were deserving winners of this quarter final Hurling championship. They simply put in an impressive second half where they hurled with determination and more conviction than some of our lads.

Shamrocks had the perfect start and two early goals from Chris O’Neill and Fergus O’Neill. Alan McCarthy sent over two long range points as well. Unfortunately Alan was soon sidelined due to a hand injury and his loss was huge.

We had a four point advantage at halftime 2-5 to 0-7. Both teams found it difficult to register early scores in the second half but unfortunately Valley Rovers capitalised on some shortcomings to register two easy goals. This set them up to drive on with much more effort and determination. In the final minutes Shamrocks threw the kitchen sink at them, but stout defending and near misses denied Shamrocks a victory they badly needed.

Overall Shamrocks came up a little bit short in many positions. However we had lads who never gave up. Barry Mulqueen, Brian Sweeney, Chris O’Neill, Aonghus Boland and Fergus O’Neill all gave of their best.

We must thank and acknowledge the players for putting in a fine effort this season and progress was certainly made. The introduction of some minor players to the panel made a significant contribution.

Our numbers were tight with only twenty available for the Valley Rovers game. Progress is being made and with magnificent work being done at minor level we can surely look forward to great hurling days ahead.

Coach Declan O’Neill was full of praise for the players and they put in some great training sessions during the year which were enjoyable and worthwhile. Thanks is also due to his colleagues John Hanley, Pat O’Neill and John Twomey (Shanbally) who worked very closely with him. Hurling is a great game and there is no doubt that the work put in this year will bring rewards in the future.
