Minor Football League V Ballygarvan – 30/3

Ballygarvan 2-6, Shamrocks 2-9

Shamrocks Minor Footballers made the short trip to Ballygarvan a winning one as they came away with a 3 point victory. This was the first game that Shamrocks had close to a full panel to pick from and it showed as they picked up their first win of the season. They were helped in no small part by two early goals which Shane Horgan and Rory Horgan slotted home after a few mistakes in the Ballygarvan defence. Ballygarvan came back into as the first half wore on and created more scoring chances at the other end; however Shamrocks did go in at halftime leading by a point 2-3 to 1-5; Shane Horgan, Tony O’Mahony and Alex O’Sullivan with the Shamrocks points.

The second half again was close but Shamrocks did just about enough to deserve their win. Cathal Kidney was winning great ball from kickouts and feeding the forwards who, while missing quite a few chances, kept the scoreboard ticking over through both Horgans, Alex O’Sullivan (who had a fine game for an under 15 player) and Kidney from a free. Shamrocks led by 3 points with 10 minutes to go but Ballygarvan broke downfield and finished off a pitch lenght move to draw level. However, Shamrocks finished the stronger with a couple of late points to run out deserving winners. Its hurling next Sunday away to Tracton at 4pm.
