Junior A Hurling League V Crosshaven – 20/3

Shamrocks 1-13, Crosshaven 2-6

Shamrocks started their hurling season with a hard fought win over Crosshaven in Shanbally on Sunday afternoon last. Crosshaven had a game the previous week under their belt and it showed in the first half as they were slightly the better team, especially coming up to halftime when the scored a quickfire 1-2 to lead at the break 1-5 to 0-4, Seanán Collins, Brian Sweeney and Mickey Prout with the Shamrocks points. Shamrocks were happy enough to turn top play into the bottom goal with the breeze with that deficit to make up. And they secured 3 points in quick succession at the start of the second half and they were only a point behind. But Crosshaven broke away at the other end to punish a slip up in the Shamrocks defence to cancel out the good work at the other end. However, Shamrocks main men around the middle 1/3rd, like the returning Brian Sweeney at left half back, Seanán Collins at centre, Fergus O’Neill on the other wing along with Michael Prout, Alan McCarthy who hit a load of ball once he settled down and Joe Shanahan were feeding nice ball into Barry Mulqueen and Stephen Keane in the forwards who were beginning to show promise. Stephen Keane bundled home a goal and suddenly Shamrocks went in front with 10 minutes to go, a lead they didnt lose. Some of the Shamrocks scores were right out of the top drawer and will have pleased the new management team of Liam Shanahan, Jim Ronayne, Pat Murphy and Pat O’Neill going forward. Details are sketchy at this stage as to whether we’ll have a game next weekend but the management hope to have something in place.
