Shamrocks 5-13, Kinsale 0-6.
The Shamrocks junior footballers got their league campaign back on winning terms after a comfortable victory over a Kinsale team; short a few regulars on the day. Last year Kinsale beat Shamrocks in the championship 1st round and the home team were determined to reverse that result from the word go. They owned possession in the first half and with some nice football being played, they stormed into an early 0-5 to 0-0 lead after 10 minutes and just kept going to half time, such was the dominance. Brian Sweeney at full forward proved a real thorn in the Kinsale side and he along with Joe Shanahan and Cathal Kidney did almost all of the 2-10 first half scoring for the greens. Barry Mulqueen at midfield was outstanding for Shamrocks (and he got a point last week in the hurling – sorry Bar!) and he along with the halfback line and his midfield partner Alan Mac ensured that Shamrocks forwards had plenty of possession. The intensity in the second half dropped somewhat as Shamrocks emptied the bench but they still managed to put together some flowing moves, resulting in Seanán Collins, Dave O’Neill and Michael Prout scoring second half goals. Next game is against Kilmacabea (a big test against the league leaders) on Friday April 8th at home, followed by CHAMPIONSHIP against Carrigaline the week after.
