A quite incredible second half performance from Shamrocks got them their first win at under 12 this season. After playing so well in many games and improving without much success on the scoreboard, its nice for the lads who are putting in the effort to get a moral boosting win.

It was a game of 2 halves, dominated by the strong wind. Grenagh played with it to their backs in the first half and went in at halftime leading 2-6 to 1-1, Evan Seymour with the Shamrocks goal. It was a battling first half from Shamrocks who enjoyed plenty of possession and attacks considering the wind but shooting from 25 yards out was proving difficult. A few switches seemed to keep Grenagh from adding to their total; despite the 8 point gap and some silly mistakes which cost the lads 2-1, there was enough to suggest that maybe a comeback in the second half was on – it all depended on Shamrocks getting some early scores.

And did they what. Shamrocks owned the ball from the throw in and scored a cracking 1-7 in the first 7 minutes of the second half. Seán Andrews scored the all important Shamrocks goal that put them ahead for the first time, following a flurry of points from Dylan O’Flaherty, his brother Cian (moved out from goal) and Harry Andrews. Shamrocks were further boosted by some outstanding defending from Evan Seymour, Mark Sisks blockdowns and young but tigerish Fionn Herlihy. Robert Van Pelt showed safe hands in goal, while Jody Sisk was busy throughout, getting stuck in wherever needed.

Grenagh, after being stung by that blitz, realised that they were behind and came right back into it but further good work from Luke O’Driscoll, Keith O’Donoghue Howe who won good ball in the corner forward position and Shane Donegana who was always willing kept Grenagh to only a point. Shamrocks broke up the pitch and tagged on a few points, mainly from frees to close out the game. Sam Geary at corner forward also had a great second half.

This was the lads first win and hopefully they can kick on from it. They play Whitescross next Wednesday in a hurling league game, away at 7.30pm. Therefore, they will train on Monday at 7pm. With numbers tight, it was great to see practically everyone available ready for action and rearing to go in a Shamrocks jersey. Two players are currently on the injured list with hand injuries, namely Sean Browne and Dylan Gregson and the club wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them back soon.

On Wednesday evening Shamrocks make the trip to Ballinaspittle to play Courcey Rovers in the Hurling League.

Shamrocks have been out of hurling competition since Aprll 7th and the long layoff had its effect in the first half of the game. The home side aided by the strong prevailing wind and evening sun got into action from the throw-in and were hitting points from all over the field. On the other hand Shamrocks were struggling to get themselves back on track.

Despite this, full back and captain Colin Brady and centre back Barry Mulqueen were competing manfully and bringing life back into the team. Courceys had a twelve point advantage at halftime.

Team Coach Declan O’Neill had some sensible advise for the lads at the break and they entered the second half like a new team. Shamrocks were now competing all over the field with some great individual efforts emerging.

David Hayes, Dave O’Neill, Alan McCarthy and Jamie Murphy were driving the team forward and Shamrocks scored 2-6 to Courceys 0-4 in that period. Shamrocks hit a lot of wide balls, whereas the home side hit very few. Michael O’Neill’s long striking from the goal proved very effective. Courceys possess some very fine and talented players and competition with these lads was most beneficial to our team on the night.

Team: Michaell O’Neill, Michael Prout, Colin Brady (Capt.), David Hayes, Senan Andrews, Barry Mulqueen, Dave O’Neill, Fergus O’Neill, Alan McCarthy, Jamie Murphy, Stephen Keane, Brian Cusack, Stephen O’Neill, Senan Collins, Joey Brady. Subs - Stephen Downey, Cathal Kidney, Coby O’Grady.

The next encounter for the Hurlers will be on Monday evening next May 27th at Bishopstown.

Shamrocks will play the ‘Town at 7.30pm. A full turnout is called for and no doubt further progress will be achieved.

It was great to see our esteemed Club Chairman Mr. Pat McCarthy at the game. He was recently indisposed and is making a rapid recovery. He was enthusiastically driving on the team and was so pleased with their second half performance.

Shamrocks under 12′s made the trip to Knocknaheeny on Friday night and after a good display from our lads, had to give way to an older home side.

Shamrocks played some excellent football in the 1st half and deservedly led by 2 points at halftime. The homeside gradually got on top however in the second half – the Shamrocks lads made some slips ups in front of goal and they got tired naturally.

However, they are making great progress and the future looks bright for them. Our thanks to Aidan O’Leary and Dick Andrews who looked after the team on the night and to the parents who supported the lads and provided transport.

Shamrocks 2-14, Carrigaline 3-5

Shamrocks avoided elimation from the competition at an early date with a fully comprehensive win over Carrigalines second team in a match played in Camden in Crosshaven on Sunday morning.

If Shamrocks lost they were out because they played a Preliminary game earlier on. This was Carrigalines first outing, in the 1st Round proper so they survive to fight another day. However, Shamrocks wont care and this win opens up a window that may last until July, depending on results.

The game was dominated throughout by the fierce crosswind that blew right across the pitch and made football difficult, in particular at the start as the teams tried to adapt to the tough conditions. Shamrocks were first to score as Cannice Caffrey rifled over a point from play from a 20 yard angle out that was akin to a player shooting from way out the wing in normal circumstances, so bad was the wind.

However, Carrigaline struck for 2 quick goals, from long balls in and opened up a 2-0 to 0-2 point lead on 10 minutes. Even this early on, it seemed that Shamrocks were the better team and never panicked, always busy on the ball and threathening danger in attack. They scored a few points, again mostly from play, to come right back into it and lead 0-7 to 2-0, after 20 minutes. Their forward line was getting nice ball, direct and largely clever and with purpose. And they added 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of half time, first from Philip Brady (MOM) and secondly from Brian Sweeney who was excellent all through. Shamrocks now had a 2-7 to 2-1 lead and turned to face the hill in confident mood.

Carrig started well in the second half and added a few points to bring the gap back to 4, eventhough Shamrocks never really looked in danger at any second half point. They proceeded to kick some wonderful points, 5 in a row all from play, to open up a 9 point gap. They really were all excellent scores from Philip Brady, Brian Sweeney, Cannice Caffrey, Darragh O’Sullivan and sub Stephen O’Neill who was prominent when introduced. Philip Bradys scores were a thing of beauty and every single time he got the ball, he had the Carrigaline defence ringing the alarm bells.

Shamrocks were 10 points up, 2-13 to 2-3 with 10 left. Carrigaline did make a valiant effort in the last 7 minutes with 1-2 but it was all over at that stage.

Shamrocks will be happy with the rebound after the disappointmet against Tracton. 2-14, of which 2-11 was from play was impressive enough. When the forwards get good ball, they will trouble any defence with their skill and alertness. The whole side played their part today, including the defence with their ability to deal with the ariel ability of Carrigaline. With a few regulars to come back into the side like Michael Prout, Joseph Shanahan (just back from his travels) and Barry Mulqueen, not to mention Dave Hayes (both returned from Oz and was outstanding), the greens can look forward with confidence going forward. Shamrocks now have a break until the end of June/early July, depending on other results elsewhere.
