U14 CFL Semi Final – 18/18

Clondrohid 4-11, Shamrocks 2-8

The Shamrocks season at u14, which promised so much earlier in the year, ended in another semi final defeat, this time to Clondrohid who made the trip to Shanbally on Sunday afternoon. Shamrocks had beaten Clondrohid in the first round of the championship by 4 points and this was a nice bit of revenge for them. They were fired up, they had that bit more football, they were match fit and they carved open Shamrocks especially in the second half, in which they dominated after making some astute switches.

For Shamrocks, its a disappointing end to the year – a lost final and two lost semi finals. They played some great football all year but ended up with nothing to show for their efforts and their lack of football showed today. Still, they have found some new players this year and can look forward with confidence to the next few years.

Shamrocks played their best football in the first half and at one point opened up a 7 point margin, 2-6 to 1-2. Seán Browne and Seán Andrews scored the Shamrocks goals and Dylan O’Flaherty and Andrews did most of the point scoring. At this point things were looking good, but Clondrohid scored the next 1-5 without reply either side of HT and they controlled matters until the end, adding on a few more goals and points. Shamrocks just could not break down the Clondrohid defence for the few goals they needed.

Thanks to the players, the management team of Jed and Tim and to the parents for their efforts this year.

Donal Enright RIP

The death has been announced of Donal Enright R.I.P a former Secretary of the Club who served during the golden era of Shamrock Under Age successes in the early 1960’s.

Donal, a nonagenarian at the time of his death, was a native of Currabinny, where he grew up. The Enright’s had long links with Shamrocks and were very prominent in the early years of the Club. His Uncle, Jimmy had a forge in Shanbally, where he shod horses and made gates and other ancillary items for the farming community.

A very popular member of the Club, he was part of the group who arranged the purchase of our present day pitch in 1963. He drove a Volkswagen car and it was always packed with players going to games. In those days Mick Walsh was Chairman and Ted Hanley was Vice-Chairman and it can be said that much worthwhile work was done then to move the Club progressively into the future.

Donal lived in ‘Villa Pio’ at Monkstown.  He later went on to be a huge promoter and advocate of the cause of Padre Pio the famous Italian Stigmatist Capuchin Friar. He visited Padre Pio, long before there were good travel arrangements to access the Monastery. Donal travelled the length and breath of the Country speaking about this unique and much admired Capuchin Priest.

A book was written about Donal’s exploits and his work for Padre Pio and the many fascinating experiences he encountered have been recorded therein.

We mourn his passing and extend our deepest sympathy to his sons Pio, Gerard and Donal, daughter Alessia, and grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Minor Co CFL Semi Final – 10/10

Shamrocks 5-8, Kildorrery 2-7

Shamrocks are into the County C League Final after this win over the visitors to Shanbally on Saturday evening.

A strong breeze blew straight up the pitch and Shamrocks played with it in the first half. They would want a few points lead such was its strength but they got more than they bargained for. They scored 4 goals in the first half and dominated possession and could have had even more points. David O’Sullivan scored two goals, one from the penalty spot, David Andrews drilled home another and Andrew O’Grady finished off a 45 yard run with another unstoppable shot. Mark Hitchmough and Andrews had scored the Shamrocks points. Kildorrery themselves scored a penalty just before halftime to just about keep themselves in touch. HT score read Shamrocks 4-4, Kildorrery 1-1.

Whatever chance Kildorrery had of staging a comeback evaporated straight after halftime as Darragh Scriven scored another Shamrocks goal. David O’Sullivan and David Andrews slotted over some more points and the game was effectively over. Kildorrery did keep plugging away and mounted a comeback of sorts with a goal and a couple of points but Mark Hitchmough and Shane Downey from a close in free kept Shamrocks ticking over and  the game was out of reach of Kildorrery long before the end.

So Shamrocks are through to the Co League Final at this grade, details of which will be announced as soon as we know. They have also to play Lee Gaels in the East Final at a later date. So after a layoff since July, the Minors have some important games to look forward to in the next few weeks – training continues. There was a great turnout of players for this game as well.

U8 Football Blitz – 10/10

Shamrocks travelled in force to Na Piarsaigh GAA grounds this morning.

They had 19 players togged out and entered 2 teams and played Carrigtwohill, Na Piarsaigh & Mayfield. Good strong physical games were played and the lads were well up to the task.

This was the final blitz of the year and medals were presented afterwards.

We should mention the wonderful help Deirdre May provided during the year – texting, handling queries, Academy work etc. In addition, John Jordan hardly missed a blitz – thanks John!

Seamus O’Flynn, Shane O’Donovan & Stephen Keane coached the lads through most blitzes.

Parents, grandparents, siblings, friends – all made for wonderful atmospheres at the different venues during the year – sincere thanks to all!

Finally, to the players – well done on a great year and lets keep it going now with the Academy and the indoor training when it starts in November.
