U14 FL V Grenagh – 2/5

Grenagh 5-10, Shamrocks 3-5

The U14 footballers played Grenagh in Shanbally on last Thursday evening 2nd May. It was a great evening to play a match. The match started with a lot of possession for our lads but scores were hard to come by. We were playing down the hill on the second pitch with the aid of a strong breeze. Grenagh soon found their rhythm and put over some nice points from play. This was soon followed by a Grenagh goal. This was the wake up call our lads needed and for the next twenty minutes they played some excellent football. A David O Sullivan goal and two points from play had us back in the match. It was tit for tat right up to the half time whistle. The second half started with us getting some more points from play and another O Sullivan goal had us trailing by just three points. Grenagh then opened us up to score a goal and three points without reply to kill off the game going in to the last few minutes. Joe O’Keeffe got a goal and a point soon afterwards to leave the final score 5-10 to 3-05 to Grenagh.

The score line didn’t do justice to a very brave and encouraging Shamrock performance. Shane Flavin in goal made some fine saves and used the kick outs wisely. The full back line consisted of Cathal Murphy who made some fine interceptions and the Man of the Match Evan Seymour who still at U12 was a rock all night. In the half back line we had Daniel O Mahony, Ruari Mehigan and James Lynam. These lads ran themselves into the ground and can take great pride in their effort over the hour. Joseph O’Keeffe had the difficult task of maintaining midfield on his own. He showed some fine touches and also got on the score sheet. Our half forward line was young Dylan O Flaherty, David O Sullivan & Shane Downey. Some of the fast movements that they showed lead us to some fine scores. The two inside forwards were Darragh O Leary and Jake O Donoghue and they were marked by much more physical and older opponents. Cillian Hayes, Sam Geary, Sean Andrews and David Johnson all made fine contributions when introduced throughout the match. These lads are away to Whitescross next Thursday and hopefully will get the result that they are overdue.
